Review

'(Connelly's) enthusiasm is infectious...'Christopher Wood, Times 2, 10th November 2005FILM INTERNATIONALIn these new studies, Mark Connelly and Sarah Street concisely summarise the films and place them historically.

Product Description

Since its release in 1948 "The Red Shoes" has come to be regarded not only as a British classic, and as perhaps the most widely loved of all of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger' collaborations, but as a highlight of world cinema. Its fantastic - and indeed fantastical - mixture of dance, music, colour and light has inspired audiences across the decades. The first comprehensive study of the film that marks the pinnacle of the directors' remarkable relationship, Connelly's book offers fresh insights into this intriguing and beguiling work and into the characters at the heart of the story: the Svengali-like impresario and his obsession, the ingenue dancer embodied by the brilliant Moira Shearer. According to many accounts the most successful British film ever made, it is fitting that "The Red Shoes" should be celebrated in 2005, the centenary of Powell's birth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb book to be read again and again just as the film is to be seen again and again., 21 Feb 2007
By Simon Turner "michaelpowell" (Borneo) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book does like a dream what anyone would most want from a book about their favourite film: give the reader again that feeling of wonder that so captured them. The author has packed this book full of insight, so it is no pedestrian well-researched but nothing more account of events. The book begins at that level but takes off. A TCM book on another of the brilliant Michael Powell's superb films, 'Black Narcissus' suffers from its film studies theory approach, obscuring the film and offering little insight. But this one on The Red Shoes can only really be beaten by the books of Powell himself, such as 'A Life in Movies' and 'Edge of the World'. But all three ought to be bought!
