Product Description

Review

This book about showing off fast, strong legs turns into a book about legs going into hiding, a story where legs have to be kept-under-a-shell secret legs. The author and illustrator also reveal the truth about snail shells and the slippery substance snail's trail behind them. (www.curledupkids.com )

A very funny cautionary tale, enlivened with Korky Paul's distinctive illustrations. (Scholastic Best Books of the Year 2007 )

Product Description

Snail is the fastest runner in the whole wood. Frog used to be faster, but now he is too old. But when the king's chef arrives in search of the strongest legs to help him prepare a special birthday treat for the king, the two friends argue over who will have the great honour. They decide to settle the matter on a race and Snail looks like he will win easily. But he looks back to see the determination on old Frog's face and decides to hide away and let him win. Frog is declared the champion with the best legs in the kingdom. However, one question still remains. What is the chef going to DO with Frog's legs?

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect picture book for the slightly older reader, 26 May 2007
By Jane Clancy (Lancashire) - See all my reviews
Most picture books are aimed at the very young - but here's one that's sure to appeal to even the oldest primary school child (as well as their mums and dads).
Korky Paul's illustrations are instantly recognizable to most children from his Winnie the Witch books, and although I hadn't read any of Damian Harvey's books before I will certainly be tracking them down now. The combination of Harvey's quirky story and Paul's wonderful pictures make this book an absolute joy and will keep the reader/listener entranced.
A great book to read aloud.

2.0 out of 5 stars callous, 13 Nov 2008
By Mr. S. Joseph (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Snail's Legs (Paperback)
the illustrations are good but I found the story very upsetting, and so did my kids. My 8 year old son was very disturbed by it. Would not recommend for sensitive kids. The moral of the story seems to be saying that if you do a favour for someone it can end very badly. Believe me I am not one for sanitising fairy stories but I found this very callous the writer got you to like the character and then sent one of to its death.
