Review
Shelley Fowles' gloriously funny adaptation of a traditional Hungarian folk tale is accompanied by illustrations in the colourful, sophisticated-naive style which she has made her own. (www.bettybookmark.co.uk )

Product Description
Outside the King's palace stands an enormous tree, its top hidden by clouds. No one has ever climbed to the top or collected any of its seeds. Rosa's stepmother and stepsister Irma are always calling Rosa a monkey because she can climb anything, from drainpipes to trees. So when the King proclaims that whoever brings down some seeds from the tree-top shall marry his son, Rosa decides to make her step-family laugh on the other side of their faces... Shelley Fowles' gloriously funny adaptation of a traditional Hungarian folk tale is accompanied by illustrations in the colourful, sophisticated-native style which she has made her own.

4.0 out of 5 stars A modern take on a traditional fairy tale - excellent, 24 May 2008

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Climbing Rosa (Paperback)
This is a lovely story about a king who decides that his son can't just lounge about all day, so he decides to find him a wife. He decrees that the woman who can climb the largest tree in the kingdom and bring back some seeds of the rare flowers that grow at the top can marry the prince. Rosa lives with her evil step mother and step sister and is used to climbing because they make her sleep on the roof! She decides to give it a go.

This has so many elements of traditional tales, but put together in a modern and interesting way. Rosa is no milksop and the prince is just funny. There are some lovely twists and the writing is very amusing. The illustrations are also excellent, paintings with lots of gorgeous detail that keep pulling the eye back to the page. A really satisfying read and nice to see something new.
