Product Description
Synopsis
Milo is fed up. He wants to play at being a pirate captain, but the other children say he's too short, he must be a deck hand. He's too small to be a lion, and not handsome enough to be the prince. But Milo's mum makes him see that the other roles can be even more fun. After all, knights get to fight dragons, and monkeys have far more fun than lions, swinging through the trees! Winner of the Little Tiger Press New Author Prize 2003, this is an empowering story of how, with imagination and his mum's help, one boy turns rejection into triumph.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help build children's confidence and imagination, 20 Oct 2005
By Mrs C L Holmes (Newbury, Berkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
What a fantastic book! The illustrations are extremely detailed and fun. The story itself is magical and it is easy to see why it was chosen as a winner! This serves as a useful tool in helping shy children gain more confidence and build their self-esteem, whilst also helping them with their imagination. I think this book is 'special'! Definitely one for teachers in Key Stage 1 to have in their classrooms!

Milo wants to join in with his friend's games, but is always told he is too small or not strong enough to be the lion or pirate captain etc.Until given the confidence that he is special and can be who ever he wants to be by his Mum.a great story with a great message.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely story, with good pictures and a great message, 18 Sep 2007

This review is from: I'm Special, I'm Me! (Paperback)
Milo with his glasses and walnut whip red hair is an ordinary little boy, setting off into the school playground with his friends. When they go out to play, he'd like to be a lion in the jungle game but isn't the strongest so he's has to be a monkey instead, and is a rather sad monkey. But mum thinks being a monkey could be great fun. And the next day Milo would like to be captain of the pirate ship but has to be a deck hand. But his mum can always see that it is just as much fun being an alien as an astronaut, a knight as a prince and so on. And by the end Milo's friends all want to be whatever Milo is. And Milo is happy just being himself. It's a lovely story, with good pictures and a great message. Great to help children who have started nursery or school and are adjusting to their place in a class pecking order, and for children becoming conscious of the peers strengths and need to build the confidence to see their own.
