Product Description

Alan Shearer was born in 1970 in Gosforth, Newcastle. A football-mad youngster, he captained his school side and wowed spectators with his already amazing skills. Determined to make it in the world of football, he decided to leave school at the age of 15 and headed to Southampton where he had been picked up by a professional scout. Shearer quickly became a sought after talent as he moved on to Blackburn Rovers, turning down a lucrative deal at Manchester United in the process, and in a record breaking transfer deal he finally made it back to his beloved North East when he signed for Newcastle United. He is a star player with dedicated leadership skills. As captain of the Toon Army, he inspires his team and proudly leads them out onto the pitch with determination to win. A footballing legend and hero to the fanatical and faithful Magpies fans, Shearer is one of the most important names in modern football. This book charts his rise to first team fame and his happy homecoming to the proud North.

From the Author

This was my first book and, as such, the finished result was
not perfect.
However, I must point out that I only had three months in which to write it
and my remit was to produce a bog-standard biography of Shearer which
covered the essential elements of his illustrious career.

A paperback version, with amended sections and additional material, is due
out in May 2007.

5.0 out of 5 stars The story of the Newcastle United legend, 28 Aug 2009
By M. Anderson (United Kingdom, Blyth) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
206 goals, over 400 appearances for Newcastle, record-breaking goalscorer in the Premier League - it can only be Alan Shearer - Toon hero. Starting out at Wallsend boys club in 1986 at the age of 15, Shearer went onto be promoted to the first team of Southampton, where he was an instant hit, making 158 appearances and scoring 43 goals. He was then signed by Blackburn Rovers for 3.3 million pounds, where again, he was a massive hit. He stayed with Blackburn until 1996, making 138 appearances for them and scoring 112 goals in that time. Then came the record-breaking chance of a lifetime when Toon 'Messiah' Kevin Keegan signed Shearer to his boyhood team, Newcastle United for the then world record transfer fee of 15 million pounds. In the ten years of glory he spent on Tyneside, Shearer scored at least over 30 goals a season, having a deadly striking attack with players such as Les Ferdinand. The news broke in 2005 that United dreaded to hear - Shearer would retire at the end of the 2005/06 season, and went out by scoring a goal against rivals Sunderland in a 4-1 defeat of the Black Cats, before retiring with a testimonial at St James Park against Celtic. Shearer was injured but came onto save the Toon Army for the very last time scoring the winning penalty in front of his beloved Gallowgate End. Shearer is a legend and this is a must have for any Newcastle fan

4.0 out of 5 stars well-researched and comprehensive, 24 April 2007
I actually enjoyed this - for a first effort, it's not bad, and gave me a good insight into Shearer, although you won't find anything you never knew about the great man.
Yes, it relies heavily on newspaper articles and not so much on accounts from Shearer's mates/schoolfriends/teachers etc, but most of the quotes are colourful and insightful.

However, I note that a paperback of the book is due out soon, and I'd be inclined to go for that rather than the hardback as it will be updated, I assume.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a first try...., 12 April 2007
By Bri W (Cumbria, UK) - See all my reviews
It's clear a lot of research has gone into this book and, while there may be excessive use of other sources, it's interesting to read the quotes and comments about Shearer in the press down the years....

Hard to find much more to say about this man, whose life and career have already been so well-documented. Worth a read, but there will be no surprises in this book. A bit like Wor Al, actually.
