Product Description
Synopsis
Alan Shearer was born in 1970 in Gosforth, Newcastle. A football-mad youngster, he captained his school side and wowed spectators with his already amazing skills. Determined to make it in the world of football, he decided to leave school at the age of 15 and headed to Southampton where he had been picked up by a professional scout. Shearer quickly became a sought after talent as he moved on to Blackburn Rovers, turning down a lucrative deal at Manchester United in the process, and in a record breaking transfer deal he finally made it back to his beloved North East when he signed for Newcastle United. He is a star player with dedicated leadership skills. As captain of the Toon Army, he inspires his team and proudly leads them out onto the pitch with determination to win. A footballing legend and hero to the fanatical and faithful Magpies fans, Shearer is one of the most important names in modern football. This book charts his rise to first team fame and his happy homecoming to the proud North.

From the Author
This was my first book and, as such, the finished result was
not perfect.
However, I must point out that I only had three months in which to write it
and my remit was to produce a bog-standard biography of Shearer which
covered the essential elements of his illustrious career.

A paperback version, with amended sections and additional material, is due
out in May 2007.

1.0 out of 5 stars Simply dreadful, 12 Jan 2007
This is a positively awfully written book, I am sorry to say. Packed full of cliches and lazy journalism, it reads like an extended inaccurate tabloid newspaper article. Within three of four pages in the first chapter I found several glaring factual errors - Shearer's two goals against Dubnica stood, neither was declared an own goal (that came in the second leg); Newcastle lost 2-1 away to Deportivo, not 3-1; they drew 0-0 with West Ham at the beginning of 2005-06, not Aston Villa; and, worst of all, Kevin Keegan's first goal against Newcastle against QPR was not a diving header but a poke under the onrushing goalkeeper ! These are basic facts you would expect a journalist to get correct, particularly as some only took place a matter of months ago ! The errors are, for a football fan, unforgiveable.

Furthermore, we are treated to ludicrous tempting pieces of tittle-tattle such as the paragraph where it states "Shearer's name was linked in the press with Swedish student Jenny Lindstrom in 2006". Really ? Why ? Did he have an affair with her ? Tell us please ! No, it transpired that she was a student who wrote a thesis on him. The author then quotes some banal lines from the thesis and that is it, the last we hear of this "stunning" revelation and Ms Lindstrom.

Quotes from schoolfriends and old schoolmasters etc are thin on the ground and appear to have been lifted from previous serialised material from tabloid newspapers. We learn nothing new or revealing about Shearer whatsoever. The book simply details his career and tells us what a great player he was. I'm sorry but we already know that. The prose is pedestrian and, to be honest, extremely boring.

In all my reviews I have not given a one star rating. There is always a first time. This piece of work is drivel, I am sorry to say. I cannot recommend it in any way.

4.0 out of 5 stars well-researched and comprehensive, 24 April 2007
I actually enjoyed this - for a first effort, it's not bad, and gave me a good insight into Shearer, although you won't find anything you never knew about the great man.
Yes, it relies heavily on newspaper articles and not so much on accounts from Shearer's mates/schoolfriends/teachers etc, but most of the quotes are colourful and insightful.

However, I note that a paperback of the book is due out soon, and I'd be inclined to go for that rather than the hardback as it will be updated, I assume.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a first try...., 12 April 2007
By Bri W (Cumbria, UK) - See all my reviews
It's clear a lot of research has gone into this book and, while there may be excessive use of other sources, it's interesting to read the quotes and comments about Shearer in the press down the years....

Hard to find much more to say about this man, whose life and career have already been so well-documented. Worth a read, but there will be no surprises in this book. A bit like Wor Al, actually.
