James Horton, an experienced oil painter and teacher, offers just the sort of information that less experienced artists require and they will undoubtedly benefit from the thoughtful advice in his book. The accompanying reproductions of his oil paintings richly illustrate the text and demonstrate how his bold, direct approach captures the essence of his subjects. In the first chapter he deals with materials, starting with paints, including alkyd-based pigments, with their speedier drying properties, and the water-soluble variety as well as traditional oils. Drying times and other qualities are also discussed. He offers useful advice on brushes, palette knives, easels, mixing palettes, mediums and solvents. There is an interesting section on the use of colour, in which he lists his own fairly limited palette, describes how he mixes his own varieties of greys and greens and explains how colour may be used to create aerial perspective. He deals with composition in general terms, without laying down any hard-and-fast rules. He then describes how a viewfinder can help the artist to isolate promising sections of the landscape and goes on to emphasise the vital importance of careful observation before tackling oil painting techniques generally. The remainder of the book is devoted to painting the various constituents of the landscape - skies, water, trees and foliage, hills and mountains, seas and beaches and the four seasons.
