Product Description

Review
This is a delightful book which will appeal to both embroiderers and artists. If you have ever wanted to create an embroidered work of art this is the book to inspire you, filled with beautiful colour photographs. The sixteen projects it contains are an invitation to have a go. In each chapter Jane shows how to enhance your work using fabric dyes, wire ribbons and chiffons. All the embroideries, presented with poetic introductions, are accompanied by helpful photos and notes in which the author explains the basic techniques, from first steps to the finished project. --West Country Embroiderers, Winter 07

Product Description
"Exciting", "exhilarating", "unbelievable" are words that capture the brilliance of Jane Hall's amazing embroideries. The sheer magic of her work is in its beauty and its awe-inspiring attention to detail. Stitched and woven in pure silk and gold threads on delicate fabrics, embellished with fragments of shell, irridescent feathers and semi-precious stones, her work takes on a quality that is both startling and memorable. Flowers, leaves, grasses, toadstools, butterflies and bugs are translated into three dimensional scenes and panels, born of a love of nature and an intuitive understanding of the natural world. Jane works almost entirely by hand, evolving each piece, adapting ideas and changing the image as it naturally develops. This book explores Jane's extraordinary world, the materials she uses, her techniques, and her understanding and interpretation of nature. Packed with ideas, inspiration and information, it will appeal to all embroiderers and textile artists everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nature reflected, 16 April 2007
By Ms. J. L. Mclean (Leeds, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The previous reviewer seems to have missed the point of this book. I have it, not as a 'how-to' book, because it would take years of work and masses of talent to achieve what Jane Hall does, but as an inspiration. The book is gorgeous, full of details of the work and beautiful pictures. I will never be an artist, but this book helps you to understand the urge to recreate and reflect the wonderful world around us.

I have met the author and discussed her work, and I am left with the overwhelming impression that she does what she does by hard work and love of nature. She really does do it all by hand, work from very little planning, and spend months on the tiniest details. If you want a how-to guide, that's the only advice she could give. You seal the edges of a piece of silk with a candle flame by spending years getting the technique right.

The best thing I can say about this book is that it made me look at nature in a new way. I would be happy to recommend it to anyone, not just artists or aspiring artists, but anyone who loves beautiful things. The techniques described are not ones which can be learned in a few minutes from a book. They are the result of a lifetime's dedication, and it shows. Absolutely delightful.

2.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful chocolate box, 2 Mar 2007
By Z. Herbert "solaan" (Lancashire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is beautifully produced and has many attractive photographs of Ms Hall musing on seashore and meadow. Sadly , this is not what I bought it for. Her work is, without doubt, skilled and intriguing but her descriptions of how she achieves some of it are difficult to visualise. How does one seal the edges of a .175" silk fabric circle with a candle flame? How does one cut such tiny, perfect circles by hand at all? There is much emphasis on, 'tiny', invisible', 'dainty', 'delicate', 'graceful touch' and so forth but cleverly not enough hard information to help us attempt the work with any degree of success. "I rarely make plans for a piece.." yet the storyboards and proposed swatches are meticulously arranged. The prose style is too fey and self-indulgent for me; the photographs of her studio appear very contrived in their styling. In all, I found this book to be a beautiful, empty chocolate box.
