Product Description
The rise of religious cults and sinister sects has been a disturbing phenomenon of the twentieth century that has continued past the millennial rumblings of the apocalypse approaching. "Cults" examines the prophecies and practices of these controversial groups, the essence of their appeal and the experiences of those who were once members. The main part of the book is taken up with modern cults, but this is set in context by the coverage of extreme religious groups of earlier ages.
About the Author
ROBERT SCHROEDER has travelled extensively, having worked in various parts of the world as a journalist. While in North America around the time of the Waco massacre, he gained in interest in exploring the rationale that often lures apparently ordinary people into extreme and radical religious movements. Schroeder's attraction to the subject was further stimulated by the bizarre activities of Temple du Soleil members in Canada in 1994. Retiring from journalism that year, he settled in the UK, and following the millennium, he began a writing career exploring the world of cults and fringe sects.
