Product Description

Product Description

'Achtung!', 'Gott in Himmel!', 'Donner und Blitzen!' For the generations of men whose obsession with military history was triggered by reading war comics in their youth, here at last, is Commando's ultimate collection of Second World War stories. The Dirty Dozen showcases the best of the best - and 25 per cent bigger than the originals, so old guys can read the strips without their glasses! Chosen by current Editor George Low, the brilliantly drawn stories in this classic collection range from backs-to-the-wall heroics at Dunkirk and Battle of Britain dogfights, through desert warfare in North Africa and daring commando raids behind enemy lines, to tough battles across Europe from D-Day to VE Day. For everyone whose comic-book battle lust has ever been stirred by Nazi cries of 'Die! Englischer schweinhund', The Dirty Dozen will transport them right back into fictional combat situations they'd forgotten were so much fun. Aaarrghh!

About the Author

George Low started working on Commando comic books in 1964, three years after their launch. He is the current Editor of Commando, only the third incumbent in Commando's history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, 26 Dec 2005
If, like me, you are in any way interested in reliving your chidhood, then this book will bring back a lot of memories! I was brought up on these comics and now have a considerable collection. This book has an intro from the current editor and then some superb stories, all of which capture the stiff upper lip attitude of the comics. There is a small input on the covers but no more unfortunately.
Most of the stories number pre 600. The art work is superb and if you arelucky enough to pick up copies of Achtung Commando, then your reference material is complete!
If you don't already own the comics conatained in ther book, then this is an essential purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still good after all these years, 28 Feb 2007
I have to wonder how many of these they sell to people who aren't men over 40 but it's a fantastic trip back to the comics which were essential reading and playground swap material in the late 1960's and early 1970's.

I was caned for reading this at the back of Double Latin - and still think that I make the right choice while the teacher was a Squarehead spy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pocket Battle Strips, 15 May 2007

I discovered a friend had never heard of, let alone read a Commando book as a child. I was amazed and dismayed. What, I wondered, had the poor chap done to be so deprived? I shudder think what dialogue he made up for his Action Men without access to this rich source material.

Anyway, a brilliant idea to publish this collection - let's have more.
