4.0 out of 5 stars Adieu, farewell, au widersehen, 13 Mar 2009

Goodbyes are the order of the day in this collection of short stories. The two previous reviewers have described the collection well so it just remains for me to say that the stories range from excellent to indifferent; my favourite was Sixth Doctor story 'Curtain Call'. For the price this is one of the better 'Short Trips' collections and I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Centenarian cometh!, 12 Aug 2006
By LJ Scott (Colorado Springs, CO USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"There is nothing special about Edward Grainger. His life is much like any other - full of family and friends, love and passion, incidents and turning points. He travels, works, laughs and cries. He has parents, a wife, a child, a grandchild. He lives life to the full. There is nothing special about Edward Grainger. Except... from the day he was born, until the day he will die, he keeps meeting the Doctor. Sometimes a different Doctor, sometimes the same Doctor. There is nothing special about Edward Grainger."

Book includes stories by authors such as Joseph Lidster, Gary Russell, Ian Mond, Glen McCoy, Steven Savile, Richard Salter, Benjamin Adams, Simon Guerrier, Brian Willis, Lizzie Hopley, John Davies, Stel Pavlou, Samantha Baker, James Parsons &
Andrew Stirling-Brown, Stephen Hatcher and a story based on a story by L.J. Scott...

4.0 out of 5 stars Farewells, 27 Mar 2007

14 new short Doctor Who stories revolving around the theme of farewells:

In 'The Mother Road' the 1st Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan take a road trip across the USA in a charming, amusing and warm tribute to the first TARDIS family. 'Father Figure' is a decent if slightly predictable tale of the 2nd Doctor helping Victoria come to terms with her father's death.
'The Bad Guy' is an overwrought weepie about an alien who gets rather to attached to Jo Grant.

'Separation Day' has the 3rd Doctor attempting to reconcile two lovers on whom the fate of the universe hangs. 'The Very Last Picture Show' is a very odd and cartoonish tale of the 4th Doctor and Leela verses popcorn-munching zombies and space weevils. 'Into the Silent Land' is a decent but plotless character study of the morose 4th Doctor as he reaches the end of his incarnation.

'Wake' uses the novel idea of examining just the outward ripples of one of the 5th Doctors adventures in an alien necropolis, but ultimately it makes for a rather uninvolving 'so what?' story. 'The Velvet Dark' starts off encouragingly spooky with the 5th Doctor called to the Master's funeral, then descends into a melodramatic ending showing just how sad a panto villain the Master is. 'Life After Quelth' follows on from the ending of 'Frontios' with the 5th Doctor travelling with the Gravis and encountering a race of very stupid aliens trapped in a time-loop. 'Black and White' is a seemingly pointless tale of the 5th Doctor musng over a computer virus.

'Curtain Call' tells of the 6th Doctor's attempts to save a woman's life, and features a nice sting in the tail. 'Utopia' is a rather heavy-handed political rant as the 7th Doctor goes up against genetic engineering. 'The Wickerwork Man' is a hilarious tale of the 8th Doctor combatting an evil alien that is stuck in the form of garden furniture. 'The Three Paths' is a beautiful story that sees the 1st Doctor returning to Gallifrey to visit his mentor and come to terms with the future.

As ever, a mix of stories, but the good outweight the bad and make this one of the better Short Trips collections.
