Product Description

Product Description
Suppose you went into a museum and you didn't know what it was. From the first sentence of this brilliant book, Jan Mark inspires us to think. She muses on the Muses and the word museum, on why and how people collect things, on different kinds of museums (cabinets, buildings, villages, towns), on their contribution to science and on the notion of classification. She examines the Elgin Marbles (saved or stolen?), famous fakes, the dodo, and some great collectors.

About the Author
Jan Mark (1946-2006) was one of Britain's most distinguished authors of books for young people. She was twice awarded the Carnegie Medal and also won the Penguin Guardian Award, the Observer Teenage Fiction Prize and the Angel Award for Fiction. Richard Holland is a talented new artist. The Museum Book is his first major work and it inspired in him a new collage style to reflect the historical aspect of Jan's text. He lives in Essex.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of its Kind, 19 Feb 2009
This is a wonderful breath of fresh air for a subject that usually ends up as 'Visiting a Museum with Mum', a few pictures of a child looking at a dinosaure or Greek vase!

This book is written in a mature style for its child readers. Not patronising or too generalized. Plenty of information wrapped in a delightful creative non-fiction approach.

Highly recommended for the varitey of information about The Museum.
I learnt a lot as an Over 50 !
