Product Description

Product Description

England, 1914. When recruiting officers come to her sleepy village and her brother enlists, Ellen knows that her life will never be the same again. She longs for something more than her life as a housemaid, at the beck and call of "the toffs" as her dad calls them. Ellen's brother returns home after losing a leg and through helping him, she realizes what she really wants to be - a nurse at the front. When her sweetheart is killed, it only makes her more determined to help. Despite huge opposition from her family, she goes to train in London, eventually fulfilling her dream by travelling to France and working in a field hospital till the end of the war.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 22 Jul 2007
By Scribbler (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This is a fantastic book! It follows the history of World War One, seen through the eyes of Ellen Wilkins, from the start of the war right through to the end. Ellen sees what happens to her brother, Jack, when he goes off to fight, and eventually decides she wants to go to the Front herself as a nurse. The story of how she grows in confidence and begins to question the attitudes of those around her makes a gripping read, and we really care about what happens to this compassionate, brave girl. There are some painful, heart-rending moments but the suffering of the soliders and their families is so sensitively described that the book isn't too dark overall. It gives you a great idea of what life must have been like for ordinary people as the war continued for those four long, awful years. Once I'd got into the story, I couldn't put it down.
