Synopsis

Once upon a time in a dull, grey, endless place called Cementland, there lived a very special boy who wishes to find a treasure. After much searching among piles of greasy ovens and wet, smelly socks, he spies a box filled with specks and a wrinkled note that says, "Put these wondrous riches in the earth and enjoy." Horrified to learn that thieves are after his treasure, the boy scours the junkyard and conjures a creature to stand guard - a scarecrow-like gardener with crooked bony arms, a giant belly, a jaunty crown and preternatural wisdom: Frog Belly Rat Bone, King and Protector of the Specks.

This book is the antidote to all anodyne children's stories. Although the message is clear - to respect the environment and work as a team - the presentation is very unusual. The illustrations are slightly abstract and very dark to begin with and the text is beautifully written with longer, unusual words to stretch children. My four-year old loves this book and so do his parents.

This is a rather 'grown-up' picture book. If you are looking for cute characters, you are not going to get lucky. It is, however, a beautifully illustrated object, which you will just want to touch. It is well-paced (which I consider most important for a picture book) and very touching. I like that the optimism seeps from the story into the illustration. Definitely worth reading - especially to older children who can appreciate it.
