5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!, 29 Jul 2006

This is the best in the Large family series so far, and is absolutely hilarious.

Daddy looks after the children for the day, with hilarious results.

My wife was in stiches when she overheard me reading it to my little boy, and I got to the bit about lunch. Lunch is rather inevitably burnt by Mr Large whilst he watches football on TV for 'a bit'!

Very well observed, witty writing which amuses grown ups and entertains little ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a bargain!!, 3 Oct 2007
My son absolutely adores these. He's 2.5 and has had a Large Family story (as well as Winnie the Witch) each night for the past 6 months - i have bought him other books - honest, but these are the all-time fave!! The CD's great for those long car journeys. What's more - what a fab price.

1.0 out of 5 stars cliched and stereotypical, 6 Nov 2008
We were given a box set of The Large Family as a Christmas present for our then 1 year old daughter. At first, we read her the least worrying of the set, `Five minutes Peace' and hid the rest. After a few months she found the CD and demanded to listen to it and, realising there were four more books, insisted on hearing them. Despite misgivings, we let her listen to them when she insisted but have now taken the ultimate step of disposing of them on the sly. It's a pity because she really does seem to like them, but frankly we hate them. It's inexplicable that they are so popular. They really don't measure up to the breathless praise on the back cover from the Guardian, amongst others. I have a number of concerns about the negative messages in them: e.g. a few days of eating healthily and exercising makes the Large family feel universally terrible and then they all give in and ate cake (`A Piece of Cake'), or Dad is such an incompetent that everything descends into chaos when he has to take charge (`Mr Large in Charge'), and a catalogue of other issues: grumpy, snappy parents, Dad goes to work/Mum stays at home, the unchallenged assumption by one of the Large children that because a story book is about cars it's `a boy's book' etc etc. I suppose one could argue that all of this is just a `realistic' depiction of an average family, but I for one think it's just reinforcing obsolete or negative stereotypes and peddling clichés. The language itself is never anything but mundane. It certainly doesn't have the lyrical quality of some of the best children's fiction. There is so much excellent fiction out there for the same age group from the likes of Julia Donaldson, Jez Alborough, Alexis Deacon - the list could go on a long time. My point is that this just doesn't measure up. For us, the crunch moment came when I heard my 23 month old daughter saying repeatedly `I'm fat," in imitation of Mrs Large in `A piece of Cake'. We even had a debate about whether to just send the books to landfill or donate them to a charity shop because we felt bad about some unwitting parent buying it. I gave it one star because the illustrations at least are quite charming.
