5.0 out of 5 stars Accidental Symbolism, 15 Oct 2008
By Amy Mulholland (Wales, UK) - See all my reviews

I first read this book when I was in High School, and I loved it. It was intelligent enough to hold my attention but the writing style wasn't so flowery it made me want to retch.

Jack Yeovil (pseudonym) manages to weave a dark and powerful story through references to classic film characters such as Norman Bates and Hannibal Lector, all the while the animalistic and brutal Jessamyn Bonney is a breath of fresh air on the sassy, female heroine front. There is a wonderful symbolism to the story (though I'm not sure if it was intentional or not) of how she becomes more human as she physically becomes more mechanical, which really intrigued me. Her transformation into Krokodil is handled believably and this book remains a source of inspiration for my own writing, now that I'm out of High School.

If you like dystopian futures and female leads showing that they don't have to be delicate to be engaging, or even to be sexy, then this is probably the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Bizarro, 9 Sep 2007
By Mr. A. D. H. Lowe "sweetestbeyonce" (Leeds, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Although this isn't listed as such, this novel falls into the bizarro category, and was written before the term even existed. It was Jack Yeovil who inspired me to write, and now I'm Features Editor for a magazine with a novel due to be published in 2008.

Krokodil Tears follows Jessamyn--a young cyborg who must face the Tazmanian Devil (blatantly a parody of Hannibal Lector, but mixed with Taz from the Tazmanian Devil cartoons), a Californian bounty hunter with all the technology a millionaire can muster, and the Jibbenainosay--an extra-dimensional, Lovecraftian beast guided by the religious leader Nguyen Seth, who himself reminds the reader of Kane from the Poltergeist movies.

This is certainly one to read. The prose is vile, vulgar, demotic and broken, yet oddly energetic and interesting. Yeovil (actually NME film reviewer Kim Newman) is a huge pop culture buff, with parodies of Psycho and other seminal films seeded throughout the novel.

Just read it. You'll love it.
