5.0 out of 5 stars Truly worthy of living forever, 30 Oct 2004
By A Customer
Well, if you don't play Warhammer 40,000, you're gonna be a bit lost, but this book is still a masterpiece. From the brilliant political skirmishes within command to the majestically sweeping battles, the war for Vervunhive is written by Abnett as if Dan was there himself. Out of the entire Ghost series, this rates as my favourite, and if you read it you will see why. However, I would not advise reading this book if you haven't read First and Only and Ghostmaker, as you will get very lost, very quickly. If you have read the first two, you will be hooked on this chapter in the history of the Tanith First-and-Only.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great war story, 4 Jun 2007
By YaromCMG (Milton Keynes) - See all my reviews
This is the first Gaunt'e Ghosts book that I read and I founf it to be absolutely fantastic. I was a great fan of Sven Hassel when I was younger and I find this to be in the sames genre (although the language is tame in coparison). I read this because I am interested in Warhammer 40k. However, this is a great story in its own right, with thrilling and meaningfull battle action that is very well explained.

One thing that makes his books all the more realistic is that Dan Abnet does not hesitate to make casualties out of charaters in the book, increasing the sense of loss. One thing that is clear in these books is that all the characters presented are vulnerable, and their survival and continuation in the series is not certain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpeice, 29 Dec 2006
By M. Behenna (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you've read the previous books, be prepared for a whole new experience for Gaunt's ghosts, as they along with other units of the Imperial Guard, are tasked with defending a gigantic city. This book is a full blown siege, all one massive battle which won't stop until the very end when one side is completely annihilated. As always Gaunt must also remain on watch for treachery and deceit within his own allies. It's highly recommended that you read the other two previous books first, otherwise the sheer bulk of characters may get you very lost. This novel could be the best yet that I've read out of the first three in the series, I'm starting to wonder how the author can seemingly raise the standard and surpass my expectations each time and I am eager for more in order to see if this trend continues.
