Product Description
The last successful invasion of England; mobs burning Catholic chapels; one king, James, driven from his palace by night while another, William, rode in at the head of a foreign army; the events of winter 1688 were among the most dramatic in our history. The settlement which followed would place England decisively on the path to freedom, toleration, parliamentary democracy and empire. Few moments have done so much to shape this country as the Glorious Revolution. But 1688 would change England in other ways as well. This was the time of Isaac Newton's scientific breakthroughs and John Locke's philosophy. The 1690s would see free market ideas emerge, the first stockmarket boom and bust, the end of press censorship and the arrival of religious toleration. Newspapers were opening. London was becoming a mecca for leisure and conspicuous consumption. In decisive ways, the modern world was formed in these turbulent years. Weaving political drama in with the lives of scientists and revolutionaries, stockjobbers and refugees, "The Last Revolution" paints a vivid canvas of England's last great political struggle, a struggle which often, at the time, seemed far from glorious. Here are the political exiles who plotted against James II, and the financiers who established the City; here are philosophers and gamblers, actors and entrepreneurs and not least,- traditionalists defending cherished values against The Moderns. Closely researched, teeming with dramatic incident and vivid character, "The Last Revolution" brings to life the revolutionary world of the late seventeenth century. It offers timely reminders about religious toleration and the political freedoms on which we depend, and, finally, provides a brilliant insight into the emergence of the dynamic, constantly changing world we inhabit today.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good informative read, 12 Jun 2008
A very readable account of the revolution of 1688, and also an account of why the revolution is so important. Dillon's history concentrates on the changes in England and particularly in London, but he is particularly good at describing how so many of the institutions of the modern economy and state were founded in the revolution's wake.

The book is a good strong reminder of the significance of the 1688 in the modern world. The only arguable defects are its narrow geographical scope, and the perhaps excessive detail on real estate development in post-revolutionary London (Dillon's background is in architecture and real estate).

Dillon convincingly demonstrates the importance of 1688 more than most other histories of the revolution.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good overview of the changes that shaped much of our modern world., 6 Mar 2008

(REAL NAME)
Patrick Dillon writes a superb, detailed account of the turmoil that surrounded this period in history. While the glorious revolution of 1688 is explored in detail with the personalities of Kings William and James shining through, it also catalogues other changes to Britain that were ushered in at the same time and introduces us to many of those characters including Sir Isaac Newton. However while this is a superb book I could not help but feel slightly lost in all the detail, as well as this we are constantly brought back to the North family. While they are obviously there to illustrate how modern England was changing I could not help but see them as slightly irrelevant to the story Dillon was trying to portray. However with these minor points aside this is a very interesting and informative book on a contentious period of history with great references for further study.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating story, 21 Oct 2007
The book covers the 1688 ousting of the catholic Charles II from England and the installation of the protestants, William & Mary as the monarchs. It was a time of much change during which the foundations of modern society were laid - religious toleration, parliamentary power, joint stock companies, the foundation of science, and technical innovation based on science. A fascinating story with sharply drawn characters.
