'Fabulous. . . the stuff of adventure storybooks and the National Geographic' Daily Telegraph 'Gripping and very different' Elle Girl

Product Description

In 1980 seven-year-old Sabine Kuegler and her family went to live in a remote jungle area of West Papua among the recently discovered Fayu - a tribe untouched by modern civilisation. Her childhood was spent hunting, shooting poisonous spiders with arrows and chewing on pieces of bat-wing in place of gum. She also learns how brutal nature can be - and sees the effect of war and hatred on tribal peoples. After the death of her Fayu-brother, Ohri, Sabine decides to leave the jungle and, aged seventeen, she goes to a boarding school in Switzerland - a traumatic change for a girl who acts and feels like one of the Fayu. 'Fear is something I learnt here' she says. 'In the Lost Valley, with a lost tribe, I was happy. In the rest of the world it was I who was lost.' Here is Sabine Kuegler's remarkable true story of a childhood lived out in the Indonesian jungle, and the struggle to conform to European society that followed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 7 Dec 2005
By A Customer
The book is a truly fantastic read. Sabine writes about all of her experiences in such detail, both in the jungle and back in Europe trying to fit back in to the European way of life as opposed to a jungle exsistence, that you really feel like you are there with her. I never wanted it to end and I really hope that she writes more about the tribe in the future. Fascinating and inspiring.

5.0 out of 5 stars I belong to "no one's land", 22 April 2007
By Philomena (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This is not only the captivating story of a girl growing up in the jungle with a tribe that has habits so entirely different than ours.
It depicts the struggle of a person who had to forget everything she thought she knew and let go of all the assumptions she grew up in. It's a story that speaks to the heart of anyone who ever had to leave their home country and adapt to a new culture or grew up in a culture that was never entirely `their own'...

Not feeling at home where you are and realizing that the place from your childhood dreams doesn't exist anymore...
Never a place to call your true home...

This book is a marvelous illustration of how it is to belong to "no one's land"...
