Product Description

Product Description

This is the first title in an all-new series exploring how to cope with problems of the mind. New scientific discoveries have shown which parts of the brain react when we feel panicked, depressed, or overwhelmed emotionally. By harnessing this knowledge we can begin to understand how our brain generates feelings and what we can do to control these experiences. The causes of depression are often difficult to explain, but this practical book focuses on how the depressed mind works and what can be done to combat this debilitating condition. Providing a detailed analysis of available drugs as well as a set of cognitive therapy exercises to help alter the way the brain responds, this invaluable guide will enable sufferers to tackle the specific problems of depression.

4.0 out of 5 stars Broad sweep, 20 Aug 2004
There are many books written on depression and often they focus on a particular area, such as CBT, anti-depressant medication etc.. so it was nice to find a book that covers most areas from the biological and chemical to social and psychotherapy. As a chemist I found the scientific portions easy to read and interesting and as a sufferer I found the overall information succinct, pertinent and straightforward. The book is well written, short enough to maintain ones interest and well laid out. There is particular attention paid to the pioneering works of Aaron Beck and CBT and a description of the common medications available for treatment. There are several references for further info and lots of the papers are free on the web for the more curious reader (like me!!!).
Overall a good and broad intro to the subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what it says on the tin!, 19 May 2009

(REAL NAME)
This is a good informative overview of depression. Attention is paid to how the mind works with illustrations which is quite unusual for such a book. It also goes into detail on the CBT currently available and describes forms of therapy.
It does not, however, offer techniques on how to beat depression as the title might suggest. It is more of an overview on what is available. It's up to you to get it.
