Product Description

Product Description

More and more men are leaving behind their mother's cooking and laundry skills without any idea of how to fend for themselves. Virtually idiot-proof and packed with straightforward and comprehensive information, this book should become a cultural classic no man can afford to be without. A humorous (yet entirely practical) guide for men - and the occasional woman - in desperate need of some household tips, "Household Management for Men" includes instructions on how to reheat a takeaway, the basics of ironing a shirt, all the gen on packing a suitcase, what the laundry labels on your clothes actually mean, and unravels the mystery of the vacuum cleaner. Not only will they never leave the toilet seat up again, they'll be the domestic god of the bathroom - and (in turn) every room in the house.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and essential handbook, 16 Feb 2005
By A Customer
I must admit, I had reservations over purchasing this book because of the reviews given for it by customers. A 3* average didn't bode particularly well. Nevertheless, I'm a bloke who has been pampered since birth, and in dire need of knowing how to do the basics.

This book has been a godsend.

Firstly, it might not be as thick as a bible, but it's certainly not thin or lacking in substance, as some other reviews have suggested. This is a handbook which is thoroughly packed with information and helpful diagrams. Even things like organising your wardrobe are made all the easier by seeing 'how it's done'. Well done on the visuals. The whole style layout is to be commended.

It should also be pointed out that this manual is far richer in content than I anticipated. Sure, I knew it was going to give the lowdown on ironing and washing...but I didn't expect it to go as far as things like clothes, bedroom...everything you could possibly need to master. As well as detailed descriptions of how to carry out these tasks in a functional manner, it also contains very useful timescales (i.e. tasks that have to be done on a weekly, monthly and daily basis).

When I picked this manual up, I was a couch potato with absolutely no inclination to be 'tidy'. I always felt it was the resort of the neurotics in society! But having made the decision to move into a new place, I knew I'd have to take care of myself. After I bought this manual, I read through it in one sitting and, I have to say, it enlightened me. I actually felt self-sufficient and skilled, rather than neurotic. It's given me a sense of pride I didn't have before and for that, I thank the author.

Unfortunately I HAD to knock a star off, simply because of the lame jokes (as has been pointed out before...don't be a comedian if you ain't got a mic!) and because the author does seem a touch sanctimonious - the kind of cleaning Nazi that makes you feel like a second-class citizen if you don't clean your t-shirts after one wear ;) But if you want a sense of knowledge, self-sufficiency, pride, function and growth, pick this book up.

Like I say, a godsend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative without being boring, 12 Jun 2004
By A Customer
I am a woman and I bought this book for myself when I moved out of my parents' house for the first time.

It's amazing how you realise you don't know how to do the simplest of things when you're in your own place. Just little things like how often to clean things and what to use to clean.

I looked at a lot of books but most were long, tedious and boring looking. This book is fun, colourful and brief but informative.

An essential buy for anyone (not just men!) moving out for the first time without having done any housework before!

4.0 out of 5 stars Household Management for Men, 27 Jun 2005
By Louise McMeekin (Old Brompton Road, London) - See all my reviews
I have already had 2 copies pinched by male friends so it seems an invaluable piece of literature. A perfect gift for any young man leaving home for the first time!
