Pretending to be a good book, 13 Jul 2004
By A Customer
The finish to this book is quite nice, and sure enough it's pretty well written. But the content, whilst pretending to be pretty informative is actually very lightweight. Frequently Hunter Davies finds interesting topics to write about, but seems to skip by them, as though they weren't that important afterall. The chosen pictures are extremely poor, and show lack of imagination. Frequently, visiting the 1895 book of famous footballers. Which lets face it has been done countless times becfore. I even heard Davies commenting that this was like no other book. Well with the pictures it is. And often the pictures are a mere tocken to stimulate the eye, rather than to illustrate the text. Also Davies claims various things, that blatently are not true and only go to demonstrait how thin his research actually was. The example that springs to mind is about the first football songs. I believe he claims that it was Norwich fans who came up with the first recognised songs, and he dates this to just after 1900. If my memory serves me correctly. This is absolute rubbish research. It's not even hard to find all the words to a Sheffield Wednesday song that dates back to the late 1880's and early 1890's. Also you only have to read some of the old math reports for England V Scotland games to realise that songs had been sung at matches before then. When Hunter talks about how he owns some original newspaper's and reads the football section; it's as though he wants a medal. Why doesn't he get done to Collindale and get out some proper newspapers and start reading more of them. then he'd start to realise how much he gets wrong, or how much further his points can be persued. The book presents itself as a more up marcket football book, something for the more educated fan. If you are the more educated fan, Don't bother. However if you have a little facination and want a starting point to get into football history I suppose this wouldn't be a bad start. Oveall this is a very dissappointing book. which frequently finds good things to write about and then just moves on to the next thing.
