Product Description

Book Description
2000: A hot summer in Kyrgyzstan. A dry wind and an annoying cough prompt the author to visit a local hospital in the capital, Bishkek. In this strange land, he first hears the word ‘cancer’ applied to his condition.

Robin Reid pulls no punches, spares us no details in his descent into a choking illness, disastrous radiation therapy and final surrender to a laryngectomy.

Then comes the recovery, the refusal to accept a ‘mute inglorious state’, and the rediscovery of his voice. How he did this, the methods he chose, the mental state required and the back-up therapy available, are all detailed in this immensely inspiring and informative story. Essential reading for ‘laryngectomees’ of all kinds, it also affirms another side of the author’s successful struggle for communication, continuing work, and well being: his Christian faith.

Here is a man who has endured a personal Calvary, and his recovery is a lesson to us all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Captivating read, a must for sufferers and clinicians alike, 26 April 2004
By A Customer
I frankly didn't know what to expect from this book, I had to read itthough as the subject was of interest to me and I had read John Diamondsmore famous book some time ago. I read it in a couple of days. I couldn'tput it down. Its not the most beutifully written piece, but the author isnot a professional writer by trade, what it is though is very frank, honest, descriptive and anyone that has suffered cancer will reallyempathise with the author. I also think that anyone working with thosesuffering from any form of cancer should read it to gain a real insightinto cancer from a patients point of view, their thoughts, fears and theimportance of family and support and how errors, albeit minor ones, in apatinets treatment or dealings with medical professionals can affect apatient. The first part of the book deals with the bad part of cancer, thediagnosis and its treatment, and in this case the complications of it, butthe latter part shows the success of all the treatment and offers realhope. Read it, there are lessons in it for us all.
