Product Description

Product Description
This book brings together a leading group of authorities in the field to explore current criminal justice responses to the management of individuals who are convicted of sexual offences. It aims to help policy-makers, practitioners and students to develop an informed position on this complex and increasingly controversial issue. Although the focus is primarily upon the UK context, contributions from North America (USA and Canada) provide an important comparative perspective. The first part of the book contextualizes the issue of sex offenders in the community, exploring the theoretical and legal frameworks that underpin current practice. Part 2 focuses on risk assessment, providing a critical analysis of existing and developing approaches to the assessment of individual sex offenders. Part 3 develops themes in multi-agency protection arrangements, discussing the current and future roles of statutory and partner agencies in the risk management process.

First Sentence
In Philip K. Dick's 1956 short story 'Minority Report' (Dick 2002), the Department of Precrime solves the problem of violent crime by the simple expedient of looking into the future, arresting potential criminals, and punishing them before they commit their offences. Read the first page

A Kid's Review
This is an intriguing read about a rather difficult issue. With Britain in danger of becoming a society of vigilante lynch mobs, it is more important than ever before for these issues to be dealt with in a serious and rational manner. It may be questionable as to whether the notorious fable of an attack on a paediatrician has any basis in fact, but what is certain is that public unrest is reaching the point of hysteria and that solutions must be found before irrational mob law takes over. Only a few years ago local residents drove my Uncle Bruce from his former home, following rumours that he had slept with a minor in the 1980s. Frankly, he was lucky to escape this display of mob justice with his life, although he was an entirely innocent man (well, actually I suppose he's not the most 'innocent' man in the world, but he was quite innocent of these ludicrous accusations- in actual fact, he had slept with a 'miner' after having attended a performance by the 'Village People').
