Review

'It deserves to have been disinterred and brought back to haunt us, as one of this fine and varied series of translations.' - TLS --Times Literary Supplement

'Dumas's 1849 novella, never before translated into English, is an entertaining ... example of late-Gothic.' - The Times --The Times

Product Description

This first translation into English of a sinister collection of supernatural tales by the author of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo is an ideal introduction to one of the most popular French authors. Written at the height of the 1848 revolutions, Alexandre Dumas' One Thousand and One Ghosts is a macabre collection of supernatural tales, told with unrelenting detail and almost unbearable suspense. Paralysed with fear, a man confesses to the murder of his wife, and begs to be locked in prison, rather than return to face the scene of his crime. As the police probe further, they learn the ghastly truth - in a fit of fury, he had cut off his wife's head, only to see the detached head turn round and whisper to him. Gathering together to pronounce whether such 'deathly activity' is in fact possible, a doctor, a priest, and the police in turn tell their own tales of ghostly activity. The result is one of the most remarkable collections of supernatural stories ever written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Darker tales from Dumas, 30 Dec 2006
I came across this title when I was in my local book store, and it was a surprise to see this title amongst the staple of Dumas' work (Monte Cristo, Musketeers trilogy etc). Dumas is one of my favourite authors and on reading it I wasn't disappointed. It is a very quick read at only 156 pages (ex. intro and biographical note), and the narratives really draw you in. I think the cover gives away the nature of the stories contained. The stories are macabre and ghostly, there was one about a beautiful blonde vampire victim which gave me a chill as I was reading it late at night alone.

On the inside of the cover a synopsis is provided, which I feel summarises the plot of the book very well, and so I have included it here:
"When Alexandre Dumas becomes a witness in a murder case, he meets a collection of individuals who defy his preconceptions about life after death. Interweaving the narratives of a beautiful blonde vampire victim, an eccentric 275 year old Tarot author, a watchman who encounters the dead kings of France, and a labourer whose wife bit him after he sliced off her head, Dumas teasingly explores the boundaries between science and the supernatural."

It is very different from his much thicker novels, and so not all Dumas fans may like it. For those who may not have read any of Dumas work before and enjoy darker friction, this is a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars typically high quality from hesperus, 10 Sep 2008

(REAL NAME)
This book is typical of Hesperus Press. No bad thing, since their books are amongst the finest available from a modern publishing house.

This particular book is very well translated, and transfers all the nuances from the original French very effectively - all the dark subtleties of the language, which it would have been very easy to lose in translation.

The introductions are worthy of the price alone.

Hats off to Hesperus press, who treat us with the lesser-known delights from master authors.

Flaubert's 'November' is another gem that I found from Hesperus press.

To anyone thinking of purchasing this book - by all means do so - you won't be disappointed.

Then again - and be warned - you may, like me, become addicted, and buy every new release available from Hesperus!
