In Edvard Grieg In England Lionel Carley gives us a vivid picture of Grieg's connections with England, his visits, the people he met and the various aspects of his musical and non-musical life - very largely between 1862 and 1906. We also have an historical account of the family connections with Scotland. The ambition of the book is to describe Grieg's relations with England, and it succeeds magnificently in this aim. The book has a rich cast list of musical and non-musical characters, many of whom will be unfamiliar to most readers. Once again Lionel Carley shows his ability to describe a vivid cultural background to the life of a major composer.

The value of this book lies in the fact that Lionel Carley has explored a fascinating aspect of Grieg's biography - his link to England. We learn much about many performers who championed Grieg's music at the end of the 19th century, such as Agathe Backer-Grondahl who enjoyed a very successful career as a pianist and was very well received in England. Her son, who was also a fine pianist, recorded several pieces by Grieg. Edvard Grieg In England also mentions several English performers who championed Grieg's music. The composer had mixed reactions to some of these English performers - not all favourable.

In conclusion I would say read this book because it is enjoyable, a superb example of musical biography, interesting, informative and entertaining. This is a unique study of Grieg. I know of no other book which examines the relationship of this composer with any one European country. Hopefully this book will help to change musical fashion and thus encourage more performances of Grieg's underexposed music in Britain, Europe and anywhere where people love beautiful music. .
