Product Description

Synopsis

Howard Staunton was the iconic polymath who essentially founded British chess. He was the dominant player of his time and after his 1843 victory against St Amant in Paris he would undoubtedly have been hailed as world champion, had anyone thought of creating the title at that time. Staunton's name also goes down into history as the man after whom the standard Staunton pattern chess pieces are named.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating history of chess in London, 9 Jun 2004
I only found this book by mistake - when researching Howard Staunton - but it's a great addition to my chess library.

The book, published in 2004, is a history of the significant chess events that have taken place in London (Staunton's City).

A nice helping of anecdotes, scholarly research and annotated games contested by Philidor, Labourdonnais, Staunton, Morphy, Marshall, Lasker, Steinitz, Karpov, Kasparov - all of whom have played in England's capital.

The cover has a fantastic colour illustration of Staunton and adds greatly to this excellent work.
