4.0 out of 5 stars smyslov wins again!, 11 May 2003
By A Customer
this book covers vasssily smyslov's second great victory in world chess championship candidates' tournaments-once again he dominated the field as in 1953 and once again he went on to earn the right to a challenge match against botvinnik. this time, tho', smyslov won convincingly to become world chess champion.

amsterdam 1956 is a classic reprint of the coverage which first appeared in barry wood's magazine chess. the comments are first rate and are augmented by the permanent on the spot presence of wolfgang heidenfeld the germano/south african /irish master-journalist who did not let a trick past him. compare these notes to those of max euwe in his german book and these annotations are fully up to speed!

the other titans in this event were keres, bronstein, petrosian geller and spassky -so smyslov led a powerful field. however , the quality of the games was not quite up to zurich 1953 smyslov's previous candidates win-the players were just that bit too respectful of each other here and a little too prone to making blunders-as witnessed by petrosian blundering away his queen in one move to bronstein in a totally winning position-a celebrated example of chess blindness!!

nevertheless there are some rousing and clasic battles to enjoy such as bronstein's daring queen sacrifice in spassky -bronstein-spassky beating smyslov also with a long term queen sac-smyslov's cliff edge battle with bronstein-petrosian's three strategic masterpieces against geller. pilnik and filip, and the great fight between bronstein and geller.

a truly striking feature of the event was petrosian's inability to cash in on his won games-often a one mover wd have clinched the win-the games in point are against:
w v bronstein
b v smylsov
b v panno
w v keres
and w v spassky

petrosian cd easily have made three extra points from these games and thus emerged the overwhelming winner of the event-in fact he had to wait until curacao 1962- a further 6 years- before seizing his chance!

5.0 out of 5 stars Synopsis, 6 Jul 2007
Winning the candidates' competition is the ultimate and uniquely necessary passport to achievement of glory on the World Chess Championship stage.

Only four contenders in the organised history of the World Chess Championship have ever succeeded in winning the "Candidates" twice - these were Spassky, Korchnoi, Karpov and Vassily Smyslov.

Having won the 1953 Candidates and drawn with Botvinnik in 1954, Smyslov returned to the charge with an equally devastating performance in the 1956 qualifier, surging ahead of Keres, Bronstein , Spassky , Geller and Petrosian. Combined with the companion Hardinge Simpole volume on the World Championship Candidates Tournament of 1953 this book completes a record of staggering tournament expertise and determination by the immortal Smyslov.

The author is well known journalist Barry Wood, member of the English Olympiad team, Chess Correspondent for the Daily Telegraph and for many years Editor-in-Chief of Chess Magazine, ably assisted by the former German (latterly Irish/South African) master Wolfgang Heidenfeld. As before the eye witness accounts guarantee the accuracy and depth of the notes
