Grandmaster Tartakower was one of the chess free thinkers, along with Reti and Nimzowitsch, who together constituted the so-called Hypermodern School of chess. These players challenged the formal classicism of the great pre-World War One grandmasters such as Tarrasch, Rubinstein and Schlechter, and in their games they proved that many of the hallowed classical rules - concerning, for example, central control by pawns and rapid development of the pieces - could be turned upside down. This volume contains Tartakower's best games from the earlier part of his career, when the Polish grandmaster was trying to carve his way through to a world championship challenge. Of particular value are Tartakower's games with his own defence 1 d4 Nf6 2c4 d6 3Nf3 Bg4 with which he scored a number of notable victories.
