this book is the account of the ussr absolute championship in 1941 which pitted botvinnik against keres smyslov boleslavsky bondarevsky and lilienthal in a multi game clash of chess board arms. botvinnik won the tournament and then proceeded to analyse every single game with loving care-he found this invaluable experience when he went on to win a similar tournament in 1948 with the world title at stake.

Former World Chess Champion and Mastermind M.M. Botvinnik analyses the games at the 1941 World Championship with great attention to detail. At this tournament, where all the great Russian players of the time met head to head, Botvinnik triumphed - thus creating the start of his amazing reign. In this volume, Botvinnik passionately extracts the secrets of each game, whilst objectively analysing his own. A quintessential work.

this was the dry run for botvinniks assault on the world championship seven years later. in this tournament botvinnik overcame key rivals such as keres and smyslov and thus established himself as the strongest soviet grandmaster. he also wrote outstanding notes to all the games.these are some of the most profound and painstaking comments botvinnik ever made.
