5.0 out of 5 stars botvinniks mighty struggle with smyslov, 22 Jul 2002
By A Customer
this book contains two world championship matches in one-in 1957 smyslov finally overcame botvinnik but a year later botvinnik got his revenge. the author harry golombek was present in moscow for both matches as an umpire and he annotates every game with great flair and drama.the notes to the 1958 match are particularly rare and were rescued by hardinge simpole publishers from old issues of the british chess magazine. this is a unique book for that reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars great soviet battles, 21 Nov 2002
By A Customer
hardinge simpole are a new publisher on the chess scene and a very unusual one-not least because the first named publisher is an old etonian british lord who has apparently abandoned the traditional aristocratic pursuits of hunting shooting and fishing to publish chess books instead.this book is an amalgamation of harry golombeks original book on the 1957 smyslov -botvinnik world championship, where smyslov seized the crown , and golombeks comments in the british chess magazine from 1958 when botvinnik won the world title back. all the games are annotated in golombeks characteristic literary style and the publishers have done a great job in rescuing the 1958 notes from obscurity. golombek of course was uniquely place to comment on the games since he was the umpire for both matches and was in moscow throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars Synopsis, 6 Jul 2007
This book combines the account and eye witness analysis by Golombek of the second and third of the three titanic world title clashes between Botvinnik and Smyslov, unquestionably the dominant players of the 1950s. The games and notes to the 1958 match, written for the British Chess Magazine at the time, have never previously been published in book form. (A companion volume, also published by Hardinge Simpole, covers the 1954 match.) Botvinnik was the iron man of Soviet chess while Smyslov, by crushing the world's greatest players at the Candidates Tournaments of 1953 and 1956, had proved himself the most worthy challenger. These games are bloodthirsty classics between two supreme exemplars of the soviet school of chess, annotated by the man on the spot who had unrivalled access both to the players and to the very best of Soviet analysis. Harry Golombek was perhaps the king of chess writers. Chess correspondent for The London Times and The Observer, he possessed an unrivalled gift for transforming a chess game into an heroic saga with himself as the bard, singing the exploits of his chosen heroes of the mind. Several times British Champion, Golombek also played top board for England in the Olympiad and represented the British Chess Federation in the FIDE World Championship cycle. He was fluent in Russian and personally attended the World Chess Championships of 1954, 1957 and 1958 as a judge.
