Synopsis
Chopin is one of the most universally loved composers, and his contribution to the development of the piano cannot be underestimated. This biography, by Jeremy Nicholas, offers a clear perspective on Chopin's complex character, whose innermost feelings were only fully expressed in his music. 4.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent and approachable biography of Chopin, 10 Oct 2006
By C. Bell (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Jeremy Nicholas has written an intelligent and informative account of Chopin's life and works in a concise and jargon-free style which should interest people coming to Chopin for the first time and those who welcome a perceptive a fresh and perceptive take on this most popular of composers.

He delves into the facts of Chopin's life and tries to unravel what is fact and what is myth. He is not blind to the temperamental Pole's faults but neither does he ever forget the composer's originality and greatness. He is not frightened of discussing Chopin's debt to J.S.Bach and Mozart amongst others but manages a clear explanation without drowning his readers in unfamiliar technicalities - not an easy skill by any means. Consequently, he saves Chopin from the popular misconception of his being just a sickly sweet composer of pretty melodies and demonstrates that he was, on the contrary, one of the most original of the generation of composers who came to prominence after the death of Beethoven.

He is frank about Chopin's relationships too - from his fraternal friendship with Tytus Woyciechowski to his bizarre and erotically confused relationship with that cross-dressing, cigar-smoking female writer George Sand. Jeremy Nicholas is not taken in by the romantic legends surrounding these relationships but paints a vivid picture of this melancholy, self-centred but often witty man who was, more than anything else, dedicated to his art.

The book is attractively designed and illustrated and includes two Naxos cds of Chopin's music (in solid performances by Idil Biret)which are discussed within the body of the book's text.

Anyone reading this book and listening to the illustrations will come away with a deeper understanding of this popular but often under-rated composer.
