Review

From the first sentence of this enchanting, moving tale, you know this is an author with a very captivating voice indeed.

(The Guardian 20061001)

Best of all, this is a story that conveys both the beauty and glamour of the dance and also the sacrifices you have to make for its sake. Very importantly too, it’s a book about the power of love. The touching relationship between Clair-de-Lune and her little mouse friend makes a tale (pun intended) that will move even the youngest reader.

(The Guardian 20061123)

Golds writes with a profound sympathy for lonely, sensitive children that I have come across only in Joan Aitken’s The Wolves of Willoughby Chase and Elizabeth Goudge’s The Little White Horse.

(The Times )

A most unusual pleasure is Clair de Lune, the poetic and philosophical story of the 12-year-old ballet dancer whose mother died on stage of a broken heart. She is lonely and mute, but encounters with a talking mouse and a wise monk help her to understand big truths about love and freedom and sacrifice.

(The Sunday Telegraph )

Fresh, unusual, inventive, in fact wholly original...This is a truly modern day fairy tale about love...Perfect.

(The Guardian )

The best ballet book I’ve read for years.

(The Times )

Product Description
Clair-de-Lune has lived all her life with her grandmother at the top of a very old building. Her mother, a great ballerina, died on stage when Clair-de-Lune was a baby. Clair-de-Lune has not uttered a word since. After ballet one day, Clair-de-Lune meets Bonaventure (a talking dancer-mouse) who takes her to a mysterious monastery. There she meets the kindly monk Brother Inchamore and learns that it is only by being able to listen that you can learn to speak. The kindness of her two friends helps Clair-de-Lune on her journey, but on the way she has to say goodbye to one of these two dear friends... (20060401)

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
There are hundreds of bad ballet books, but this is not one of them. In fact, it's one of the best I've come across, and if you have a girl (or boy)of 7+ who is interested in dance then this is perfect for them. The 12 year old heroine is the daughter of a great ballet dancer, La Lune, who died of a broken heart on stage when Clair was a baby. Clair too looks set to become a great dancer but she has no voice, and a grandmother, La Nuit, obsessed with eradicating love from Clair's life in order for her to be devoted to The Dance. Clair's miserable life is enhanced when a talking mouse, Bonadventure, takes pity on her - he is also a dancer - and introduces her to the kind monk living in the basement of the apartment block. He asks her to think about why she can't talk, and teaches her to listen...and gradually the spell is lifted, though at the price of one of her friend's life.
What makes this stand out is the exquisitely sensitive writing, which is of an exceptional order, and the kindliness and wisdom that shines through. There is a very rare quality which this book has, which one seldom finds in children's literature - Joan AIken's The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, and Elizabeth Goudge's The Little White Horse both have it - of gentleness and comapssion. I would particularly recommend this for children who are depressed, bereaved or just lonely and shy.
