Product Description

Product Description
Princess Pearl lives with her mother and father, The King and Queen of the Ocean, in a magnificent palace beneath the sea. Everyone who comes to the palace is overwhelmed by its splendour. Everyone, except for Pearl, because she is unable to see. Pearl's mother and father want to marry her off to either Prince Maravick or Prince Araman, but Pearl is not interested in their bragging. Her heart is set on Charis, the servant boy who has kept her company since she was little. But Pearl's parents aren't impressed - not at all ...A beautifully written and exquisitely illustrated story about staying true to your heart, by this first-time pairing of an award-winning author and illustrator.

4.0 out of 5 stars A classic in the making, 10 May 2007
This review is from: Princess Pearl (Paperback)
Princess Pearl has been blind since birth, lovingly cared for by a servant boy named Charis. When the King and Queen decree that it's time for Pearl to be married, she turns her back on wealth and fame and 'follows her heart' in true fairy tale fashion. Lavishly illustrated by Sophy Williams, Princess Pearl is likely to be an enormous hit with all aspiring princesses. My 8 year old daughter can't get enough of it.

It does bother her, though, that the slim and attractive Queen should have married 'that fat, ugly King'. (To be fair, he looks like a boiled egg with Gerard Depardieu's nose attached.) Considering the book's message is partly to do with 'inner beauty' I'm personally more bothered by the fact that Princess Pearl herself just happens to be a ravishing beauty on the outside too. Blond-haired Charis, meanwhile - whose good heart wins her over - bears a passing resemblance to your average boy band member. If it's hardcore inner beauty you're looking for - unaided by flawless good looks - then stick a copy of Shrek in the DVD player. There's no denying, though, that little girls like to look at pretty faces (my daughter was gutted that Princess Fiona turned into an ogre), and these gorgeous illustrations offer plenty to coo over at bedtime.

It's a bit pedantic to point out that Pearl would almost certainly have had a female servant assigned to her... I don't suppose pumpkins are very often transformed into carriages, or girls put to sleep for a hundred years with the prick of a spindle, and Princess Pearl is located very firmly in the realm of fairy tales. In fact, it deserves to be up there with Snow White and her ilk. It's just not quite as politically correct as it thinks it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story about true love; all that it demands and all that it rewards, 13 May 2008
Princess Pearl lives under the sea in a palace with her parents, the king and queen. Charis is a boy-servant who, although born on the island above the ocean, has served Pearl in her kingdom since they were both small. Charis has always been there for Pearl, initially because it was his job, but ultimately because, beyond that, he falls in love with her. One day they slip away together to visit the island, where Pearl feels the sun on her face for the first time. Subsequently, they make many such visits; each time Pearl takes back a small souvenir (like a flower or a leaf) to keep, in a box that she made and keeps locked away. The visits stop after Pearl has to consider an arranged marriage. In the end, Pearl refuses each of the proposed suitors in favour of Charis. Pearl and Charis leave the palace together to live on the island.

It is a beautiful book with illustrations that add extra elements to the story (rather than just visualising what has been said). My daughter's favourite page is the last one where Pearl and Charis are swimming to the surface and Pearl discards her souvenirs.

Some of the wording will be wasted on the very young, and while it can at times feel a bit contrived, it is nonetheless a moving story about true love; all that it demands and all that it rewards.
