Product Description

Product Description
The gruesome, unsolved murders by the first media-sensationalized serial killer, Jack the Ripper, continue to fascinate after more than 100 years. However, from the beginning the truth has been obscured by a fog of half-truths and misinterpretations. This book aims to clear up the misinformation and myths surrounding Jack the Ripper. The author uses a critical review of the kind that is now used to scrutinize unsolved crimes. He re-checks, re-examines and re-evaluates the facts, conjectures, newspaper accounts, eyewitness reports and official pronouncements. The book includes: descriptions of the locations where the bodies were found; detailed histories of the victims; profiles of key police officials and examinations of police procedures, investigations, blunders and errors; details of prevailing myths about the case; an evaluation of all the chief suspects; comprehensive analyses of the existing literature; discussions of written communications ostensibly sent by the Ripper; and an argument identifying the most likely suspects.

About the Author
John J Eddleston is the author of numerous articles and seven books on crime, including Blind Justice: Miscarriages of Justice in Twentieth-Century Britain, Murderous Tyneside, Murderous Sussex and The Encyclopaedia of Executions.Whereabout: Shoreham, West Sussex

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant, 19 Sep 2003
The only people who won't enjoy this excellent work are the so-called experts who have written previous books. Eddleston doesn't pull his punches - not only does he list the other books but he lists their errors too!

All the possible crtimes are published, all the suspects up to publication date and the final arguments as to the most likely suspect is brilliant.

This is the definitive work on the subject and should be recommended not just as an authoritative volume but because this book can be used easily to sort out the charlatans from the genuine researchers.

Throw away your drivel on the Masonic Conspiracy, Sickert, Maybrick, Druitt, and all the other books which prove who the Ripper was. Buy this one instead and read it with an open mind knowing that Eddleston is a brilliant researcher who doesn't suffer fools gladly.

4.0 out of 5 stars An decent reference work, 24 Jan 2005

A lot varied info, good for looking up quick facts, and many of his opinions are interesting. For example, he states that the Lusk kidney was probably genuine, and the chance of Stride being a Ripper victim are 50-50. Definitely worthwhile having as a reference work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hutchinson The Ripper, 13 Jul 2004
By Antonio Sironi (Italy) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
One of the best Ripper book I've ever read in my life. This is not simply a book, but an encyclopaedia that introduce you into the dark alley of the 1888 London, following the steps of The Ripper. I highly recommended this book to everybody, for expert in the subject and as the first book to read. I perfectly agree with Eddleston when he writes that George Hutchinson has the best chance of being The Ripper. He arrives to this conclusion only using logic technique. No matter who we say was the first victim, or who we say was the last, only two were subjected to facial mutilation (Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly) and even if can be said that in the Kelly's case the killer did it because he was able to work undisturbed, this cannot be said for Catherine. Psychological profiles usually claim that facial mutilation are evidence that the killer and victim known to each other. Hutchinson knew Mary Kelly well, as he admitted to Insp. Abberline and he used to spend time with prostitute. So there's a good possibility that he also knew Catherine Eddowes. By using this assumption, physical description, the fact that The Ripper was a local man, and psychological profiles, and erasing the real possibility that the ripper's name never came to public attention (very probable), we arrive to the conclusion that the man that best fit this was George Hutchinson. This book is a must for all interested in the Ripper's Crimes.
