Product Description

Review

"'I love this book, I keep dipping into it, and reading bits aloud to my friends, most of whom, alas, haven't been on a bus for years. The loss is theirs, as McKie's highly original publication so brilliantly demonstrates.' Val Hennessy, Daily Mail 'A joyous book.' Tom Fort, Sunday Telegraph 'A copy deserves to be placed in every bus station in the land.' Travis Elborough, Guardian 'Mesmerising... the route's circuitous sweep takes in an unexpected panorama of British life and history... a delightful gallimaufry.' Nick Groom, Independent 'Superbly entertaining... something to delight and surprise us at every turn. Whatever other bus you miss, be sure it is not this one.' Simon Heffer, Country Life"

Product Description

"Great British Bus Journeys" travels to Britain's most unfashionable towns (using the least reliable method of transport) and uncovers the nation's secret history. Through the eyes of David McKie, quiet, unassuming streetscapes are transformed into beguiling and eccentric places of interest: from the Forest of Bowland to Bradwell-on-Sea, McKie's tour offers a unique survey of our land, rich with history, legend and personality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and Beguiling, 17 Mar 2006
By A Customer
This is not a book for bus-spotters. Instead it is for anyone who shares David McKie's passion for fascinating detail, obscure yet startling history, and the sheer variety of this country. There is delight on every page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bringing the landscape to life., 25 May 2006
By N. Cotton "nlco199" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
David McKie takes the reader along on his journey across a landscape of tales, turning detective to uncover the hidden histories, stories and legends which lie waiting to be discovered in the backwaters of Great Britain. McKie ties this all together with his witty observations of what he sees around him on his journeys and deliveres not just an entertaining, insightfull read but offers us a whole new way to look at the places which we normally pass through with little thought.

4.0 out of 5 stars review, 7 Aug 2007
By Dr. Elzabeth Thomas - See all my reviews

Very, very good - knowingly fogeyish with some incredibly obscure and fascinating historical material, served with a wonderfully light touch. One slight gripe - it could've used some editing. It's basically too long.
