Product Description

Product Description

Richard Cook's It's About That Time: Miles Davis On and Off Record is not a conventional biography. Instead, it evaluates, in the order in which they were made, all the trumpeter's recordings (official and unauthorized), and relates them to events in Miles's life, as well as the wider currents in music. For Cook, fourteen albums in particular are key to understanding Davis's evolution. Each of these is considered in detail, in particular their contribution to Davis's development as instrumentalist, group leader and composer. Cooks also reassesses the contributions of his fellow musicians, which have all too often been ignored or underplayed. It's About That Time is a comprehensive and rigorous guide to the music and times of Miles Davis that burns away the fog of myth that surrounds its complex and contrary subject. It is an essential companion for anyone wanting to understand the trumpeter's musical odyssey over four exhilarating decades.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of his recording career, 7 Jul 2006
By ricadus (London) - See all my reviews
The book reviews the recordings and related events and musical associates in Miles Davis' life, taking certain albums considered to be of particular importance and making these the focal point of each of the book's chapters - rather like a programme you might hear serialized on BBC Radio 3.

As well as the 14 main albums, his other album releases are also discussed and illustrated, a photo of the original LP cover inset into the sides of the text columns like a bookmark at the point where first mentioned in the text.

Each chapter also begins with a full page photograph of Miles, taken during the particular period being featured.

There is also a reasonably comprehensive and clearly arranged discography of official live and studio recordings spanning the years 1945-1991.

My only real gripe is that the printing of the photographs (in my first edition copy) is rather poor quality, with detail in the darker areas appearing as solid black. Hopefully later editions will improve this. It would have been lovely to have had all those fantastic 50s, 60s and 70s album covers in colour as well - it's a black-only printing - but I guess book publishing economics made this impossible.
