Review

"'An amazing novel. Mona Simpson joins those female literary stars - Colette, Willa Cather - whose voices are uniquely recognizable, always their own' Vogue; 'Original and profound' Independent; 'Full of remarkable observations of people... the most commonplace events are recreated in an utterly compelling way' Times Literary Supplement; 'Stunning... Simpson takes on - and reinvents - many of America's essential myths' Michiko Kakutani, New York Times; 'Anywhere But Here is a wonder: big, complex, masterfully written, it's an achievement that lands Simpson in the front ranks of our best novelists' Newsweek"

Product Description

Eleven-year old Ann August and her mother Adele abandon their home in Wisconsin and set off on a drive to California so Ann can become a child film star in Hollywood. Left behind are the two people Ann loves best in the world: her grandmother Lillian and her cousin Benny. Frivolous Adele is the cause of all Ann's worries: she's always hoping to get rich, trying to attract a new husband and spending too much money on clothes. Their relationship has always been close, but volatile. As they drive across the parched American landscape, in search of a better life, theirs is a journey of discovery - of new possibilities, of their respective dreams and of each other.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poignant Americana, 23 Sep 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Anywhere But Here (Paperback)
I bought this book mainly because I was impressed by the depiction of the relationship between Ann (played by Natalie Portman) and Adele (played by Susan Sarandon). However, as I progressed through the book, I realised that the story in the book is very different in terms of its tone and mood.

Anywhere But Here focuses on the turbulent relationship between Adele, the larger-than-life dreamer mum, and Ann, the rebellious but observant daughter. The story begins during Ann's preteens, when Adele stole a car and drove both of them to somewhere Ann doesn't want to go - somewhere that is not home. It is told from the first person narrative, of which more than half of it is from Ann's viewpoint. Other times it is narrated by Lilian, the sympathetic but apprehensive grandmother - sympathetic with her grandaughter's situation, apprehensive at her daughter's behaviour.

Simpson writes the book as a series of seemingly disjointed stories - it sometimes detracts into flashbacks of Lilian and Carol's (Ann's aunt) past. However, she is very good in creating very complex characters. Sometimes one can't help but like Adele's optimism, her cheerfulness in the face of hopelessness (like not having enough money to pay the rent, when Ann would seem more nervous about the issue than her); other times, she seemed deplorable, being selfish and spending more time with her new boyfriend(s) than with Ann. Lilian seemed to have been tired with life. But by far Simpson's biggest achievement in the book is the way she writes Ann's life and thoughts and emotions and changes of personality as she grows into an adult.

Basically, it is a poignant, frequently comic tale of Americana which will make you laugh and cry.
