5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent "Mini" Resource, 13 Feb 2008

I suppose I could just leave the title as the review as it pretty much sums the book up,

Many of the Rough Guide books are often either enjoyed or despised and usually it depends on who is actually reading them, one criticism of the series is that it often ridicules the very subject matter it is covering, personally I've never found that, liberties are often taken and a few jibes get flung in from time to time but many of these are often with the benefit of hindsight and also taking into account the social or cultural influence of the subject(s)they are dealing with,

With this volume on Frank Sinatra, it's obvious that the author isn't on board to try and do a demolition job on the Chairman! clearly Mr Ingham holds Sinatra in regard but not to the detriment of the task on hand, Sinatra is not presented as some Demi-God and his faults are documented in addition to the praise, thankfully this is all kept to a minimum as the focus, is, as it should be, on the body of work left behind by the consumate artist that Sinatra was, the largest section of the book is devoted to the music, with an album by album review of Frank's work from the Capitol days thru' the Reprise years and winding up with Duets in the '90's, Frank's pre Capitol years are also covered and a section on the most influential of Sinatra's songs along with their genesis makes for very interesting reading,

A further section takes Frank's Movie and TV output as the focus with a capsule review and synopsis of each, finally an overview of popular books, websites and resources covering differents aspects of Frank's career winds up this very handy and readable little tome, as noted at the start the retrospective of Frank's life, inner circle and friends is refreshingly frank(no pun intended)with an unbiased approach taken with the man and his image,

I've quite a few books on the life and times of Ol Blue Eyes, and in all honesty, this can stand, okay squat, given it's size, next to the best of them,

Good price and a worthwhile addition to the bookshelf, recommended!
