Product Description

"The Rough Guide to Germany" is the definitive handbook to this fascinating country. It features a full-colour introduction to Germany's highlights, from the beer halls of Munich to the hiking trails of the Bavarian Alps. There is lively and detailed coverage given to the full range of attractions, from the spas of Baden-Baden and castles of Bavaria to the jazz clubs of Munich. For every city, town and village there are discerning reviews of the best places to stay, eat and drink, in all price ranges. In the final 'Contexts' chapter, incisive discussion is given to topics as diverse as the Oberammergau Passion Play and the occult figure of Johannes Faust.

About the Author

Gordon McLachlan wrote the first edition of the Rough Guide to Germany in the 1980s, when the Iron Curtain was still firmly in place. He has updated and researched every edition since, travelling to every corner of the country and sampling hundreds of hotels, restaurants and bars.

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, 13 Jan 2008
By hypnogogia (Oxford, UK.) - See all my reviews
having owned previous editions of this guide, I found it disappointing as the level of detail about places to eat and sleep has been greatly reduced. Previous editions included great advice about good places to stay of the beaten track and these have simply left out. On the positive, the history etc is as good as ever.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview, missing vital details, 25 Oct 2009
By P. Flynn (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I took this Rough Guide with me when I spent 3 months in the Bavarian Alps and Konstanz in summer 2007. As an overview it is invaluable, and the section on Munich is very good. However, it misses out key towns and details, and sticks firmly to tourist-y hotels and restaurants, which can be frustrating.

Cramming a country as complex and diverse as Germany (and especially Bavaria) into 1000 pages is a tough job, so clearly parts won't have been as well researched as others. However, as an overview for the first time visitor (which I was when I arrived), it comes recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but..., 7 Aug 2009
By Little Me (Lorraine) - See all my reviews
Liek all rough guides this is excellent, but there is not enough about the areas off the beaten tourist track, for example the Saarland. Good though if you are visiting Munich and Bavaria, the Rhine valley.

Throughly useful book, up to the usual rough guide standards. It's a bit of a weighty tome, which considering it covers of Europe's largest countries is understandable, however... Read more
