Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
In the last few years Scotland has undergone a political and cultural renaissance--with its new Scottish parliament, Glasgow's urban renovation and café culture, Edinburgh's impressive National Museum of Scotland (opened in 1998) and a heightened "sense of identity and importance" it's certainly hip to be Scots. This fourth edition of The Rough Guide to Scotland reflects this optimism, with up-to-date information on what to see, where to go and the festivals and events (Edinburgh Festival or Highland Games anyone?) to visit.

Coverage of the country's two major cities is lengthy, although visitors to Edinburgh may prefer to take Edinburgh: The Mini Rough Guide with them for a more pocket-sized read. Where the Scotland guide is especially useful is in its travel and accommodation listings for the highlands and islands--areas geographically not far from Glasgow and Edinburgh yet in holiday terms a world apart. From the lochs to the glens, and from the Isle of Iona to the Shetland Isles, the authors suggest places to stay off the beaten tourist track.

What the guide lacks in photographs it makes up for with its quirky contexts section containing fascinating information on Scotland's history, architecture, music and literature. The book has plenty to keep you amused during the north of the country's seemingly endless nights. Plus if you've ever wanted to know how to order a beer in Gaelic, here's your chance to learn. Mine's a leann if anyone's buying. --Anna Hornsey --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review
"Outstanding. This was my fourth Rough Guide, and perhaps the best of them all. It contains an incredible amount of detail. . . Highly recommended."

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine guide whether you're staying for a weekend or 6 months, 31 Aug 1999
By A Customer
A thoroughly recommended reference; proved very useful to me in recent trips to both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Since returning I have taken the time to read the other chapters, such is the quality of writing on each region of the country. Section on Edinburgh is particularly good for choosing what to see and what not to when staying for only a short time. As with all Rough Guides, the social, cultural and historical background is excellent, although the book's near obsession with awful commercial Gaelic rock group Runrig proves a little tiresome! This a tiny niggle to what was the only book I needed on holiday this summer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review by Hamish - Destinations in Scotland Travel Guide, 3 May 1999
By A Customer
I would thoroughly recommend this book for anyone travelling to Scotland. It covers all major cities and has a real understanding of off the beaten track places, that are so often missed by the major guides. From Loch Tummel in the Highlands to the Barralands in Glasgow, the Guide has it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars You've got a scottish friend in it!, 5 Nov 2002
It is an almost-perfect guide, simply trust it and go. It is really reliable, even too much detailed if you're visiting Scotland for the first time. I've bought plenty of guides, but I only broght the Rough with me in UK. The only problem with me was that it has clearly been written for the british traveller. I would suggest the author to help foreign readers in finding out those "best scottish pubs" that can also serve good food.
