4.0 out of 5 stars Good overall but lacking something, 19 Jun 2003
By Mr M Wilkins (Nuneaton, Warwickshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book does exactly what it says on the front cover. All and all it is a phrasebook. It has a quick section at the beginning explaining pronunciation. Also a small section on the basics, time, numbers, dates etc. The good thing about this book is that it informs you exactly how to pronounce, even to the point of highlighting certain sections of the word where the emphasis of the translation should be placed.
The bulk of the book is taken up by English - Arabic and Arabic - English translation. There is a section at the end of the book that contains an Arabic to English translation of Signs and Notices and also two other sections one for food and the other for drink.
On the whole this is a very good book to taken on a trip and a excellent book to learn from, although writing Arabic could possibily be a bit more complicate!!

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just a dictionary!!, 20 Jul 2007

Of all the phrase books that I have on Egyptian, this has to be the best one! It beats all of the others on pronunciation in particular & is laid out in a very logical & intuitive way.

It's neat, small and easy to read & use. It has all the essential words & phrases that you would expect to want to use in most common situations and is very comprehensive too. On most pages there are little tit-bits of useful phrases giving you complete sentences for use in different situations. At least with this book you can actually learn some Arabic & put it to use straight away rather than just learn a list of words.

This one is designed primary for those who are visiting Egypt, but you'll still be able to use the majority of this book even if you travel to other Arabic speaking countries in the Middle East.

Learn just few simple & basic words of courtesy and you'll be surprised and very pleased with the friendly & positive response you get.
