A Little Cracker (or stocking present), 22 Oct 2005
A great little book that leaves you feeling you've read loads of the other Dylan stuff that you've not got the time to read. Well written and easy to read. It has a positive slant in Dylans favour even when re-evaluating much of the less classic periods that he is often slated for. Not rose tinted though. Ideal for a bit of light Bobology or as a gift to new converts or waverers.

An excellent quick reference point, 28 Sep 2005
Of course this is no "Bob Dylan Bible", but it is not intended to be. Its purpose is to be a reference point for quick and easy use. It does use other, more seminal, academic works as the basis for its biography section, but it is the discography which I find interesting. So many of the biographies are exactly that, biographies. There is often no rigid, chronological reference to the actual music, all mentions of it being linked to the text. That is why this handily priced book is so useful. It is well-written on the whole, as all Rough Guides are, with an easy on the eye typeface. Personally I thought the "new Dylans" section was innovative and quite interesting, bearing in mind, of course, that "new Dylan" was a complete misnomer. There is only one Bob Dylan and this reference book helps one confirm that in bite-sized chunks. Ideal on the train or sunbathing reading.

Very good, 16 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This book is an excellent overview of Dylan. The first section is the biography drawing on the many attempts by Scaduto, Sounes et al. Details appear later on in the book in the Dylanology section. The second section is the discography, a blow by blow account of every official release. The comments are subjective and occasionaly controversial. But no compaints really. There's also an overview of Bob's boots. I'm not sure the section on the 'New Bobs' (Sprinsteen, Wainwright, etc etc) was the best of ideas, but never mind.A section on Dylan's involvement with film. It's all here really, a few minor mistakes and typos for sure, but highly recomended
