3.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for beginners, 11 Jul 2003
By R. Kewley "HDDVD Convert" (North West, UK) - See all my reviews

If you are totally new to Russian this probably deserves an extra star. However, if you already know a little Russian you will probably have the same issues I had.

Good points first. The presentation is excellent; words are practiced by listening with word & picture association. Each word is pronounced twice by a male and female speaker, which helps with pronunciation. The printable picture dictionary is useful. Best of all are the irritatingly addictive games.

Bad points. If you know many of the basic Russian words, you may find the vocabulary quite limited. For example numbers only run from 0-20. I’m sure that the next CD in the series builds on this, but for me, this did not feel like great value for money. There are also a couple of things I would have liked to seen included. The format is perfect for practicing the Russian alphabet. It’s a mystery why this is not included. Also, the games are geared around listening. It would have been very easy to include a game focusing on reading, for those who wanted it.

On the strength of this title I will probably buy the next CD in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good basic vocabulary builder, 14 Mar 2002
By A Customer
It is fun to learn basic vocabulary and simple phrases with this disc. This interactive, multimedia approach is definitely more effective than classical vocab lists, phrase books etc. You will just about be able to survive in Moscow after using the course for about 10-15 hours. The disk does not teach grammar. You simply to learn to repeat basic sentences. It is not very useful for learning the Russian alphabet. It can be used as a strong vocabulary builder and speach trainer to support a more conventional course, evening class etc.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for supplementing another course, 17 Dec 2008
By R. WEST-SOLEY "raldon" (Birmingham, UK) - See all my reviews

The Talk Now! series serves as a good introduction to a foreign language for complete beginners, and the Russian edition is no exception. The vocabulary topics are useful, cover some core areas (food and drink, the body and so on) and are consolidated by some fun, addictive interactive games. It's very useful in particular to have each word spoken twice, by both the male and female models in the software.

However, it is let down by the lack of grammar / sentence building material, and as such it's probably best to use this product as a supplement to a more comprehensive beginner's course in Russian such as Oxford Take Off in Russian. You won't learn how to speak Russian with this CD-ROM, but you will learn a lot of words and really boost your vocabulary, which is great if you have another course to pull it all together for you.
