This product describes itself on its cover as: "for absolute beginners" - and it really is ONLY for those who have no previous knowledge of German whatsoever. The words and phrases dealt with on this CD-ROM are very basic, and even those with a very rusty recollection of German from perhaps a couple of years studying the language at school some time ago will probably find this program too easy and, frankly, a waste of time.

The basic approach used on "Talk Now! Learn German" occasionally reaches the point of not teaching the German language properly. For example, the section on countries does not give the gender of each country mentioned. Whilst the majority of countries in German are neuter, there are exceptions, which it would be useful to know; similarly, whilst in most cases a country's gender is not used with the country name in German, there are some cases where it might need to be and so it would be good to supply this basic knowledge.

On the plus side, the program has a bright, clear and easy-to-use interface (although sadly it does feel at times as if the makers have gone for style over content) and I imagine that if you did indeed have no previous knowledge of German, you might enjoy picking up your first few hundred words in the language from this CD-ROM. However, the longevity of the product, even for beginners, is decidedly limited by the fact that the games on the disc will only be worth playing so long as you are unfamiliar with the words used in them. Once you have mastered the vocabulary, there is not very much fun to be had in the design of the games themselves.

An ultimately disappointing product: the basic idea and design are excellent, but "Talk Now! Learn German" falls down on the most important element i.e. actually teaching the user German...

This is a brilliant German learning piece of software from EuroTalk and I would really recommend it to anyone learning German with a tutor or from a book. I would not recommend it to anyone who is looking to learn German just from the CD-Rom though. This is because it does not introduce many phrases, it concentrates mainly on vacabulary which is almost useless without the phrases to use it in. As a summary I would say this is great for improving your vocabulary, but not so good for actually learning to talk German.

If you know lots of languages such as Malay, Croatian, Russian, Tibetan, Vietnamese... etc. and want to know the German equivalent of their very simple words and phrases, then this software is ideal for you.
Otherwise, if you thought that this was intended for serious study of German, then look for any other software/book. This is really not helpful.
It took me, being hardly above the absolute beginner level, 3-4 hours to cover all the German material presented and get myself a 'golden certificate' printed.
