4.0 out of 5 stars learning with the author.., 5 Oct 2007
By Fanny L. Icker Phd (Godmanchester, Uk) - See all my reviews
This book is as much about a the author's poker life story as it is a strategy book. This may not appeal to some - mainly those who are looking for a purely theoretical approach - but the author has read Stransky, Brunson et al. and makes regular references and summations of the content of their writings and applies them to his own experiences. The focus is on hold'em, principally on limit cash hold'em, but the concepts are universal. Arguably understanding limit is the best way to learn the simple maths and self discipline needed to make consistent money at poker. It's not a game I play, but this didn't detract from the book.

The author clearly loves his subject - and is keen to spread the gospel of poker ('recreational gambling') as a legitimate hobby, rather than the slightly seedy pastime it is often viewed as. The book is a better read for this.

The UK publishers may wish to amend the rather unfortunate reference to a 'spastic' player in one of matt's anecdotes. I'm assuming this is a US / UK English language issue.
