Product Description

Product Description
The Ultimate Woodworking Course takes you stage by stage through the basic woodworking techniques. Many new woodworkers don't know which tools and machines to buy and end up acquiring equipment they do not need or can't yet use. With The Ultimate Woodworking Course you will discover which materials, tools and techniques to use at each level, and how you can improve by extending your range of techniques and equipment. Throughout there are projects that illustrate the techniques that you are learning and helpful 'jargon busters' and 'tricks of the trade' to help you as you go. By the end of the course you'll have completed a range of projects, built a dedicated workbench, and will have moved your woodworking from the kitchen table to a customized workshop. You will have become a proficient woodworker, able to machine your own lumber, create your own moldings and join any two pieces of lumber effectively.

About the Author
Within six months of graduation Nick Gibbs was editing The Woodworker, Britain's oldest woodworking magazine. He then helped found Good Woodworking, as the title's first editor, which itself became Britain's best-selling woodwork magazine. He is now a freelance journalist and editor, spending spare days in his workshop carving landscapes, sculpting chairs and making furniture. "Woodwork is such fantastic therapy," he says, "locked away in my workshop, the radio on, my chisels glinting and the hiss of shavings spiraling from my plane. Beat that." Nick lives in Ampney St Peter, Cirencester, UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Work, 6 Mar 2006
By Rob Barker (Neyland, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book has to be one of my best buys ever !!!
As a complete novice woodworker this book has done for me what no other book has done and that is to answer every single question I have about woodwork at my present level from tools, preparation of timber and using it for projects etc...
If you like woodwork, you will love this masterpiece.

3.0 out of 5 stars Big, comprehensive, good pictures but some quirks and flaws, 7 April 2009
By C Allen (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book has a lot going for it, but I don't recommend it for the absolute beginner (like me). The author is particularly prone to leaping into (to me, having never worked as a joiner...) obscure terminology. Bevel, sole, cap iron, mouth, frog...? These all appear in one paragraph on the plane, but are never defined or illustrated in a diagram.

I also noticed the peculiarities in the measurements (spotted by Mr. R. J. Outram above). I haven't tried building the projects but there seems to be a lot of very precise cutting required right from the outset, with no use made of the apparently standard wood sizes described.

I don't know why this is, but I have a theory. Whilst the book gives its first published date as 2005, it reads as much older than this; also all the measurements are odd numbers of mm but coincidentally nice round numbers of inches! I think it started life in imperial measures and has been converted. If anyone has tried building the bird box with modern finished timber maybe they could tell us whether the measurements do somehow work out, or not...

I want to like this book but find it hard work to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit disjointed ..., 18 May 2009
Not a bad book, but I found the project based approach a bit disjointed for anyone taking up woodworking. The book takes a project by project approach, and teaches the skills as you go, and the order in which skills are taught and the large amount of projects contained was an approach that might suite some. But I didn't really want to make a bird-table or any children's toys and I quickly found myself a bit lost. If you're not the patient type you might prefer to learn wooodworking from a more conventional manual that you can dip into when required such as the Collins Complete title.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners. Too disjointed.
Seems more like a collection of paragraphs than a book, with nothing really tying it together. Its certinaly not the ultimate woodworking course. Read more
