Product Description

Product Description
Wikis as information sources, as a form of publishing, and as tools for collaboration, are discussed in this book. The applications of wikis in library and information services, education and business are explored, with examples. The book begins with an overview of wikis, in the context of the increasing use of 'social software' in general and the trend towards a more interactive World Wide Web. The different kinds of wikis are identified and described. The advantages and problems associated with using wikis in information work and collaboration are discussed. One of the problems is simply that of finding wikis that deal with a particular topic or activity, and this is addressed through a discussion of directories, search engines and other finding tools. Later chapters cover the options for creating wikis and the management of a wiki. The book concludes with lists of resources. Key Features: 1. No other book currently available, addresses this highly topical subject. 2. Wikis offer advantages over other forms of groupware as a basis for collaborative projects on the Internet and on intranets within organisations 3. Very few wikis have been created by libraries, information organisations, or educational institutions, despite a focus on information management and provision in these organisations; this book will help managers in these organisations to make decisions about wikis 4. Introduces a range of wikis of different types, so that readers are more aware of these resources The Author: Dr. Jane Klobas is Professorial Fellow at the University of Western Australia and Researcher at Bocconi University, Milan, Italy. 4.0 out of 5 stars Good introductory book about wikis, 18 May 2008
When I was writing my thesis about wiki in corporate environment, this book, written by Jane Klobas was my main reference. It is a comprehensive introduction into wiki - it contains not only chapters about technology itself, but also case studies and description of areas where can be wiki used.

In the book there are 8 chapters. First two (Wikis, from social software to social information space; Wikis as information sources) are about basic features of wikis. In these chapters you can read about features which make wiki unique - the author focus mainly on the problem of collaboration and communication using wiki. Following chapters discribe areas where wiki can be used (Wiki in library and information science; Wiki in business; Wiki in education). Last three chapters gives you basic knowledge of where you can obtain a copy of wiki, which types of wiki engines are out there and how to manage wiki, when you start one.

This is an excellent introductory book for everyone who wants to get in touch with wiki technology. It does not require any deeper technological knowledge and is more focused on the user role (For more technologically oriented book I recommend The Wiki Way by Bo Leuf - review coming soon). On the other hand I would welcome if the author adds more information about areas, where wiki can be used - I suppose these chapters were not detailed enough. However, at the end of every chapter you find long list of references, so if you are interested in particular topic, you have opportunity to dig into details.
