Product Description

Product Description

Knitting is a versatile, simple-to-learn craft, it is vesatile and stress-reducing, as well as being a fashionable retro phenomenon in the wake of celebbrity knitters such as Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz. This is a guide for the beginner, starting with basics such as casting on and making simple stitches, then moving on to more complicated stiches, shaping garments and creating motifs. Each of the techniques is shown in clear step-by-step photographs and is followed by a project so the reader can build up skills as progress is made throughout the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book for beginners at knitting, 20 Jan 2004
By Wildpurl (Woking, UK) - See all my reviews
I bought this book for my niece, who is learning to knit but could not increase or decrease and only knew how to do garter stitch and stocking stitch.
The good elements of the book for beginning knitters are that all techniques are explained with pictures, from casting on through knit and purl to a range of decorative stitches which can be produced by combining knit and purl stitches. It also explains clearly how to increase and decrease.
Each set of techniques is followed by some projects in which they can be practised, which are also illustrated with big colour photos of the finished result.
For someone who wanted to learn to knit, this would be an excellent resource book and one to refer back to if in doubt about a particular technique later on.
The only criticism I would make is about some of the projects. There are some which can be done by knitters of any age, but many of them are for knitting childrens clothes. My 13 year old niece does not have children and is too large to knit them for herself! The adult sized project included was rather frumpy for a teenager.
I think it is a good thing to learn to knit young if you are going to, and the book would benefit from some teenage type projects.
That said, it is an excellent and well presented guide to learning to knit, and could be accompanied by knitting patterns for projects from another source quite easily.

3.0 out of 5 stars 'Basic and Bright'...., 7 Dec 2003
By A Customer
I bought this book about amonth ago as a gift for my niece who is a biggener-knitter. The general image of this book is bright, colorful, and attractive. The patterns themselves, basic, intermediate, and advanced, are nicely photographed, and the instructions are clear and straightforward. I find this book an 'ideal' gift for anyone who is interested in knitting and happen to be 'very' new to it. Enjoy your first steps into a pleasurable moments of knitting with this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Step-by-step instructions not clear enough, 30 Oct 2009
By A. Donnelly - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this because I wanted to learn to knit! However, I couldn't follow their instructions for casting on so failed at the first hurdle. It's too difficult to tell from the photos what direction the wool is supposed to go and whether needle goes from left to right or vice versa. Luckily a quick web search found much better instructions to get me going.

I didn't buy this for the patterns - but most are for children's clothes or cushions - so aren't any use to me.

Not the book for me but may suit some.
