Review
This book is a useful guide to sites and buildings, both old and new, connected with myths and legends all over Britain and Ireland. Divided by areas of the country, it includes a brief introduction to each section and then detailed descriptions of the particular site together with the myth or legend attached to it. Some of the characters are the stuff of dreams and nightmares, like Wayland the Smith and Herne the Hunter, others are more firmly rooted in historical fact like Jack the Ripper and Dick Whittington. There are numerous literary quotes and poems throughout the text, adding another layer to the overall picture. This is a readable book, of no great depth but of sufficient interest to enrich visits to the particular sites. The author, Richard Jones, has written several books and is a regular contributor to programmes on the Discovery and History television channels. He is the proprietor of the London tour company Discovery Walks and Tours, and has conducted tours all over Britain. The book is fully illustrated with both black-and-white and colour specially commissioned photographs, and original illustrations and extracts from contemporaneous documents. There is a comprehensive index of place names and characters, maps giving the key sites and a large list of suggested further reading. (Kirkus UK)
