Product Description

Review
'This guide provides information to help these students prepare successfully for the rites and rituals of studying, interact with staff and fellow students, cope with expectations and pressures, and understand their domestic and academic responsibilities.' - Autism us 'The book has a logical progression as it begins with a brief description about preparing for college, and then follows through to discuss what to expect from a college/university environment, including chapters on academic demands, communication and socialising with others, sex and sexuality, and managing stress and anxiety levels. The authors have a thorough understanding of Asperger syndrome, and every subject they tackle is explained clearly and honestly.' - Communication 'Students with Asperger Syndrome need an environment which is encouraging if they are to succeed. This book is immensely important for students and for the staff who are trying to make college an enjoyable and productive experience. - Paul Shattock OBE, Director: Autism Research Unit, University of Sunderland; Chairman European Services for People with Autism, Hon Secretary: World Autism Organisation.

Product Description
College life is particularly stressful for students with Asperger Syndrome (AS) and the resources that colleges provide for such students are often inadequate. This handbook provides information to help these students prepare for the rites and rituals of studying, interact with staff and fellow students, cope with expectations and pressure, and understand their academic and domestic responsibilities. Drawing on first-hand interviews with AS students and direct clinical experience, the authors address these and many other questions, and make practical recommendations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very thorough full of practical advice, 7 Mar 2004
By A Customer
We got this book for our son after Xmas. He has AS and was finding college life difficult. He has found it very useful and tells us that he consults it regularly. There are lots of small stories about students with AS which make it interesting and more personal. A lot of what is in the book is stating the obvious which is what people with AS need to know. This is a good thing. What we found most useful were the sections about anxiety reduction, handling college commitments and managing people contact. There is a very useful chapter on setting up an AS support group in college. The book also discussed a lot of concerns that we raised initially with the student welfare services about our son's needs. Access to counsellors is discussed and what to expect when with them is also discussed. It is very donw to earth for the AS person. There is a lot of information on living with others and sharing rooms. Meeting girls and dating is gone into detail. The focus is on managing anxiety and time which are big issues with AS. The book has suggestions for practice and feedback. What we liked here is that the book always says that it is okay to be different. There is a chapter on bright people with AS which is really encouraging. Overall we liked this book and our son likes it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real A to Z of information. Hits the spot., 20 Mar 2004
By A Customer
As a someone involved in counselling adolescents and young adults with Asperger syndrome I am often asked to advise on career choices. College is increasingly accessible and until this book, I hadn't come across anything sufficiently systematic to help me and recommend to my clients. When I first became aware of the book, I thought Big deal, not another book on careers and Asperger syndrome... When I got the book and read it, any reservations disappeared. It is a marvellously intelligent, sensitive guide to student life. Suitable for counsellors (like me), those with Asperger syndrome in college and planning to go there, and their parents or caregivers. Along with the three of four standard Asperger syndome reference books, this book will remain with them on my shelf. It contains remarkably large dollops of achievable commonsense for those with Asperger syndrome. All round good investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Asperger Bible, 11 Aug 2005
By Jessi - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
As a prospective university student who has Asperger's syndrome, I was very excited when I came across this book. I am frightened about going to university, as I struggle to cope in new situations and have never been able to play the social game adeptly - my blunt honesty (how do you tell the difference between tact and a lie?) and my rather obsessive interests mean that making friends is always a challenge. But the authors of this book seem to have addressed my every fear, with richly detailed, in-depth chapters on every aspect of living and learning at college. I now know what to do if I get upset or panicky in a public place, how to approach the other students, and how to tell a true friend from a false one - in short, how to succeed at college with Asperger's syndrome! This book is not quite good enough to make me learn to like other people, but I now understand that it is important to pretend that I like them, otherwise they will be cross.

I also realize that no amount of books will make my condition go away. But this one has helped to allay my fears about university and I no longer feel sick at the thought of moving to a new place (well, perhaps only a little bit). This will be like a second Bible to me - I plan to consult it regularly and take notes so I will be sure to remember everything.
